I decided to see if I could get some large prints made from my Vacation....I checked around here and the price was too expensive for me.
So I spent some time on google and picked an online lab.....

I sent them 2 photos as I did not know what to expect.....and they rated one photo "very good" for a 20 X 30 inch print and the the other "good" (neither had the best rating of excellent) so I ordered 1 of each at the 20 X 30 size...they came today and they are unbelievable....I had a lot of reservation after I ordered them that perhaps I should have ordered a smaller size......but these are wonderful!

Both the Photos were taken with a D50 but I am sure the FZ30 photos would have been every bit as good. ( but my wife shot everything in 3EZ)
The price of the photos were $9.95 each and they are really nice.

This is the lab that did them for me.......I am in no way associated with them I just wanted to tell anyone that is considering large prints to give them a look.

I am going to get some more perhaps a little smaller not because of a quality issue but 20 X 30 is really large.

I had one 20x30" print made by them. It came out excellent.

Here's the kicker-

It was shot with a minolta G500 (5mp cam) set at 3mp at time of capture. After cropping for the proper dimension, it was a 2.2mp image.

So, there might be hope for those EZ shots :)

I also claim that in-house photo printing does not make sense.

A good local photolab is a much cheaper solution.

Good to hear you are happy!

Gene,

Sounds a really good price. I paid £19 for a 30"x20" from an FZ50 RAW original (PP'd to JPEG) from a 'cheap' lab here in the UK . The result was really impressive, but their colour saturation was a little weak.

I've since had some A4 prints made by them and compared against the same image printed by QImage to my colour profiled Epson Photo 950 inkjet, and the inkjet wins by a mile. It's probably cheaper on A4 prints as well, but definitely not at 6x4 or 7x5.

Need to buy an A2 inkjet :( but seldom print more than A4 so not just yet!

I was wondering what system anyone uses to mount such a large print...I imagine a frame for these things is quite expensive.

If I would have known I was going to like the result so much I would have had them mounted and laminated.

About the color, the photos I had done was a silky waterfall and an Iceberg and I think the color is excellent.

There is a flea market about a 1/2 mile from me....I went down there and got 2 frames a little larger than the prints for 5 bucks each.....I should go down and see if they have more.

My oldest son was just asking me about printing services he could use to make a big print he needs for his photography class. I sent him links for the obvious places I knew about. But this is a new option that I think he should check out. Thank you for the information.

Genece:

thanks for the heads up on that lab for large prints, looks like a good deal. I've framed a few art prints that size, and usually pick up a frame a bit larger than the print, have the frame shop cut a matting for it (can be expensive or not depending on what you pick, and cut a foam board to put behind the print. I attach the print to the matting with acid-free tape, also available at most frame shops for a couple of bucks a roll. The tape holds the photo as solid as you attach it and won't discolor the photo. If you can get a good deal on the frame, this is pretty inexpensive and looks as good as having the shop do it.

Yes LaRee ...my Wife and I are very happy with those.....and that large size seems to be the best bargain ,I am not sure why (perhaps the paper)...but if I can find more frames I am going to have a few more printed.

Hi Gene,

Just opened the Sunday paper's flyers and Walgreen Drug is having a two for one sale on their large frames (at least this is in S.E.Mass). Largest is 24" x 36" for $13 for 2. I've never seen these but I recall a thread a few months back where folks said these were a very reasonable and nice solution to framing problems/costs. I don't know if there is a mat inside which would make them a real deal. Disclamer: I don't work for Walgreens.

Hope this is useful. George

Thanks ...I do not think there is a Walgreens within miles of me .....but do you know if there is a glass or plastic to protect the photo?

My daughter-in-law told me Walmart sold large frames but I just came back from there and the 12 dollar frames have no glass....I just did get another one from the flea market , so maybe if I keep checking I will find a couple more.
I will check the Sunday paper though.
Thanks again
Gene
