Hey !

On my way to OZ, next december, I'll make a stopover in Singapore, and wonder if it's worth buying things in Singapore anymore...

Does anyone know how prices compare in Singapore to prices in Australia or the US ?

My intention is to buy the Epson P-5000 and some gadgets....

Cheers !

Haven't looked hard in Singapore but I don't recall Epson being commonly available. Prices are higher than B&H in New York for most big ticket items. Not familiar with Australia but I believe any advantages in buying from Singapore are small.

I would look up the price in USD from B&H Photo-Video's website and make a note of it. When shopping in Singapore see what you find.

Last time I was there, prices were on par with or slightly higher than US warranty mail-order prices.

The only reason to buy over there is immediate need, or availability of something that is hard-to-find in your normal local.

I think HK is the only place where it is worth it to buy tech for the prices alone.

I have posted a similar question in Q&A forum, and it seems that very little number of people is actually checking there.

It's a good coincidance I find answers here.

In this case Singapore is not interesting and what about Thailand and Malaysia ? Is it the same story?

Thailand is higher still. Even though much of the gear is made there, it's typically shipped back to Japan and then exported to Thailand again... :-) Plus Thailand charges a VAT.

if u r intr in Epson P-5000, price will be definitely bit higher than online price. but as a tourist u can shop tax-free (5% tax here).

if u also look for similar gadgets from creative, archos or china-made... spore shopping may give u better options. u can shop gadgets in Sim Lim Square.

I did something similar - it depends on the product.

I bought some Apple gear in Australia and it worked out 5% cheaper than the UK because of the exchange rate - better still I was able to claim 10% GST back on my return to UK. Total saving 15% off UK prices.

And I feel safer buying from someone in Oz than the Siam Centre.

As for Singapore, it's only really cheap for watches and jewellery - I bought a TAG for the wife at £1400 vs £1895 in the UK. Also GST in Singapore is only 5% - so claim back is less.

I was also suprised to see that the 'latest' stuff was not out in Singapore first.

Japan is very much the same thing - Nikon Lenses are cheaper in the USA.

Actually if you could wangle it I would always suggest the USA is the cheapest place on the planet for most stuf.

Well - I live here!

I think that prices generally are higher than US, and lower than Australia and UK. It's not a huge market, and some more obscure items, particularly of smaller manufacturers, may not be routinely stocked. If you are from the UK it's certainly worth buying what you can here, provided you don't get into 'excess baggage' territory. On occasion, though, I have found it just as good to buy online from B&H, say, even taking into account the cost of sending the item, when the local agent hasn't got it (I've bought a couple of lenses new that way, and a couple of things from Keh).

So it's not a low-price paradise, but certainly worth seeing what you can find.

I find second-hand stuff often rather over-priced here, at least in the shops that stock it. If you live here private sales via the web are a better bet.

Hope that helps.

I also live here. You need to know your prices before you look as some things are cheaper here than even the US, some are higher. I have bought some Canon lenses here, some online from the US and some while in Japan. It just depended on the lens as to which location was the cheapest.

As to the Epson P5000. I do know that of the previous models, P2000, P4000 and P4500, only the smaller version, the P2000 was available here.

Singaporeis cheaper then Thailand and malayisa.
if you shop street you can also get your tax back, then again it;s only 5%.

Cathayphoto at Peninsular plaza sells a lot of difficult to find items. The airport itself mostly has just general items.

I decided to do photography as a hobby cause it's cheaper then golf

When you leave Thailand, you can claim the VAT back at the airport.

Be careful if you do not have time to shop around in Singapore. When I was there two years ago, I bought a wide angle lens for my video camera to find out a few days after that it was a lot cheaper in another shop. In a way, I got ripped off. I am from Australia, if you want to know the price on any gear, let me know, I will find out for you.

I finally decided to buy the Epson P-4000 instead of the P-5000, here in europe.
I got a good deal and at least we know that the P-4000 works !

I'll still buy some gadgets in Singapore though.... :- )
