Flowers/Insects/Macro #3 10/01-10/07

Oh, and your question on P-P: I cropped a little, used curves slightly (a tiny tiny hint of the S-curve always make the photos more vivid - then I immediately go to Edit - Fade and adjust the amount even more carefully with the percentage lever). After curves I normally use levels to make the photo slightly lighter as the curves function tend to make darker areas a bit too dark (at least for my old screen - I am not using an LCD screen so the dynamics on my old screen make dark look really dark. When I get to my office and see the same photo on the LCD screen there, it is very different with dark areas looking greyish). When I downsize for posting in this forum, I normally do a slight USM as photos tend to look softer when downsized.

Remind me not to look at this thread right before bed time. I'm going to have nightmares of being eaten alive by giant spiders and other nasty bugs.

Seriously though, this is a great thread. These pix just keep getting better and better - week by week. Very inspiring work everyone.

Keep 'm coming!

Well, not quite agreeing with you there. Both your shots are quite overexposed and looking dull in colour. Using more of your manual control could have made these two shots better.

Interesting. Is this any better? It doesn't look "right" to me on the screen I have at the moment, the previous one looked better, but that could be a monitor issue - right now I have a fairly low quality cheap 1024x768 screen (I'm currently away from home).

If it does, I'll just stop editing pictures until I get home at the end of next week, because I'm clearly wastin gmy time :-)

Cheers,

How big is that 4 eyed spider? and what do you attach to get that close and how close are you? Thanks

How big is that 4 eyed spider?
Uhm? Maybe the diameter of a cigarette? Or there-abouts... 'Twas a tiny, quick movin little sucker....
and what do you attach
The Canon 250D Achromat (+4 Diopter)
to get that
close
In 3mpEZmode since the Opanda Exif reader is showing 669mm in 35 mm Eq.
and how close are you?
Somewhere in the vacinity of a foot, give-er-take an inch or two...
Thanks
whvick
It's not a crop in the conventional sense but theoretically via the 3mp EZ mode, I guess we have to say it's a crop, in a real-time, @the-time-of-the-taking sense..... Then I downsampled it using Bicubic Sharper. So other than that there was no sharpening in the conventional sense such as USM or hard-light/Hi-pass methods... If that makes any difference for ya?

I have an old Vivitar +1,+2,+4 set. I have been using the +2 on the butterflies,so I may try to get a little closer

& or ya can try the +4 but you will suffer even less DOF & possibly softer edges too but I'd suggest an Achromat if ya really get into it.. They're generally better with regard to DOF, overall sharpness & fringeing too....
Sven whipped up a little something on the subject:

There aint too many bad choices on "THe LiST" & failing new, deals can be had on most used.... Although the Raynox choices, new, are pretty cheap, inspite of being pretty much excellent, compared to most of the others & there are several that are no longer in production but show up on EBay occaisionally.... Assuming the bidders don't get carried away...

Panasonic FZ5 im very pleased with the results this has given me for the las 8 months and im not planning to change.
  1. 1
Taken at my grans house i took over 300 in 2 hours

ISO80 1/400S F4

  1. 2
Taken in a blue bows with water in and dropped in dark red water

ISO80 1/2000s F8 fill flash

I never get anything close to that with my fz5...I keep blaming the lens on my particular camera...What close up filters or attachments did you use...and did you use flashs? Thanks for any advise
The bee is a great picture!

Thanks, i never use any filters, diopters, reversed lenses on my FZ5 i just dont see the need to. I do have a +10 diopter but this just destorts the image and the dof is non existant. The one of the hover fly was just taken as normal with no flash i used high speed centre auto focus on it and the one of the water droplet was taken with flash and locked the focus on a point befor i took the pic. Thanks for the comments

Looks a lot better on my screen. But as you say - monitors are very different. The main test I guess is printing

Dan

Did you have the camera on Macro for the fly. is it a Big fly? Would you post the shot before you cropped? Thanks

That's a very good macro shot, focused on the eyes where it should be.

btw - In the interest of clarification on the "beak". That would be the probiscus (rolled up) almost hidden within the hairs.

"Moths and butterflies do not have mouth parts for eating; only a tube-like tongue called a proboscis so their food must be liquid. Many feed on nectar from various flowers while others feed on a variety of moist rotting matter including, fruit, sap, animals, and animal droppings. Some butterflies will also visit mud puddle to sip nutrients from soil." (source: K-State Research & Extension; Johnson County Extension)

I'll be back home next week, so I'll see this thread on a real monitor and probably scream ;-) I'll try printing them too, although I'm new to the whole digital printing thing!

Thank you for the confirmation.

Heres the un crpped pic, i took these pics a few weeks back and i know i took some in macro mode as the light conditions were changing quite fast and it was struggling to focus in manual so i think it might of been taken in macro mode.
