Converting to MPEG

Try the TMPG Encoder. It is free and the result is really good. It can encode AVI into either MPEG 1 or MPEG 2 file.

Here is the link:

Other choices include the Panasonic MPEG 1 Encoder:

The Ligos Encoder:

And the Cinemacraft Encoder:

You can find a comparison of encoders here:

Does anyone know of a program that converts AVI to MPEG?

Thanks for the input. You gave me plenty to look at. What I'm trying to do is convert the the movie clips taken with a Canon Pro90 to mpeg. Then I can make a vcd. However the ones I've converted won't work. I'm using Easy CD Creator to make the vcd. When I try to add them to list the program just hangs. Not sure whats wrong.

The first program on your list works great. Maybe it's my Easy CD Creator that's not working. I have the latest version of it, so you would think it would work. Oh well I'll keep trying.

Again thanks for your help.

Mike,

You may try Nero Burning Rom if Easy CD Creator doesn't work. Get a demo version here:

http://www.nero.com/en/download.htm

For the conversion from AVI to MPEG, there is even more information available at Ross McLennan's Firewire SVCD'S and DVD pages:

http://www.geocities.com/aussie01au/index.html

Wish these help.

I down loaded the Nero and it works great. Don't have to convert avi to mpeg. It does it for you. Thanks go much for your help.

Mike,

Glad that it works for you. However, IMO first encoding with TMPG Encoder and then burnt with Nero will give even better result.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try. I'm not sure how it could be better, as Nero is working great and easy to use. I have been able to burn VCDs that work on my DVD with no problem.

Again thanks for all your help.

Mike,

MPEG encoders are not created equally. The converting efficiency and the resulting quality largely depend on the algorithm used. TMPG Encoder, although a bit slow, is well known for its resulting quality. Certainly the quality will also depend on the source material as people may convert from different sources, say the VOB files from DVDs, captures from mini DV tapes, or in your case from DC. And yes, try to compare by yourself and there may not be any noticeable difference for you. Are you using a source file of 320x240? In that case, I won't expect any further improvement by another encoder. I'm doing DV conversion with a source resolution of NTSC 720x480 and I can see the difference. Just share my limited understanding on the topic.
