No more 'where is the review' moans, please

Thanks for all you do. Your reviews, like your website, are my favorites.

I had been getting concerned that your testing of the 400D had hit some serious snag.

For some reason, I hear your post in Sam Kinison's voice.

I completely disagree. My car cost money, so does the gas, and my
taxes pay for the road. But I choose where to take it, and frequent
those places I find worth my time.

Phil doesnt need me and i don't need him, you are right. But PHIL
charges me nothing for all his time and effort. The banner ads he
runs, cost ME nothing.

How much again does it cost you to choose to come here and read all
the info? If this site is the only reason you have a computer,
internet connection, electric bill, and whatever.....that is your
choice. But I suspect you have not paid Phil himself one dime. If
he has commercial arraingements with sponsors, because his free
info drives the type of these clients the sponsors want to reach,
to his site..good for him. This is America....so he is free to earn
a profit and I applaud him if that is the case.

But I don't recall ever having to cut him a check.

Sheesh.......some people.............

You could pay him for the effort though, if you look at the bottom of your 'my threads' page you can donate by using paypal.

Lets take an oath, everytime anyone 'moans' at phill has to donate 5$. At 5 moans a day, that about $1825 a year. I don't think phil has a problem with that ;)

I've been around various Forums on this site since late 2000 under my current "name" and a previous one which got changed for some reason when I changed ISP.

This site is a commercial enterprise and, though there is no cost to visit, it is operated in very much the same way as a news stand magazine i.e. being dependant on readership levels to generate advertising sales to survive.

Phil is, therefore, beholden to his readers to provide what they want to read. His "news" "editorial" and "reviews" sections are as respected as they are because he has a professional approach which gives balanced, carefully researched information and avoids the tabloid "wow" approach of some other sites. That is how he has built his business, that is why the site is well patronised.

However, there are some on these forums who act like badly behaved kids outside a toy shop. They can't wait for the latest camera, lenses and add ons to appear. The items must be exactly what they want to the nth degree and when a release date is announced, even if only a month away, it is too far in the future - they want the items NOW. Not a few seem to have more money than sense, upgrading every time a model of their favourite make appears to offer "advantages" over their last purchase - some even swap makes and then either find terrible fault with their decision or slag off their previous favourites - before quickly moving on to yet another purchase which lasts six months or so.

The Internet makes communication easy so complaining for these people becomes a matter of a few moments at a keyboard.

I wonder how many of those who complained about Phil's "tardiness" in producing a definitive review of the 400 are actually relying on his review before making a purchase decision. More interestingly, how many would, were the Internet not available, write a letter to their favourite magazine compalining if the camera in which they were interested was not reviewed in a timescale they thought adequate. Few, if any I'd wager.

Phil's response was measured and reasonable I know many editors who would have been far more cutting in their remarks.

I'm just noticing the "tone" of Phils post. He used expressions
like "no more", "moan", "do not", like he's doing us a big favor.
And I say again: his favor is no more important than our "favor"
when thousands of us visit and contribute to the site.

All this for just 5 stinky "moaning" emails every day?!?
True, the tone was a bit harsh, but 5 emails x how many forums a
day can become quite annoying, especially if he has to reply to
every one of them. Maybe a similar message should be posted in all
forums to balance things out a bit.
Hmm. Maybe. I don't really appreciate being told to stop moaning. Even when I'm not the one doing the moaning. If Phil gets moaning e-mails, perhaps it would be better to just delete them and present a calm exterior.

a provider of product complaining that his customers are out of
line when they clamour for more of what he's in business to
provide. Sounds a little like the garbage men who complain that
there is too much garbage in the world.

Obviously you don't appreciate the difference between a reasonable expectation of a quality product with a reasonable delivery time and the ridiculous "I want and I want it NOW" tantrums that show up here and in other forums.

Presumably you'd complain that Rolls Royce couldn't deliver your car within a week or so of your order.

considering there isn't much advertizing here, I doubt they make much if any money on it after covering hosting and bandwidth, etc. I would assume they have other jobs as well and write reviews on the side.

I'll get the black one but paint it pink. It will be a sleeper. No one will know it's not a Barbie cam.

you should hit the complaint button on the original message in this thread :)

As a reader of dpreview for about 1 year, I am extremely grateful for the work that Phil puts into this site. I have learned so much from the forums, the reviews, the comparisons, and YES, I have contributed funds to support the site. When I found the site as a complete newbie, I found the information concise and very informative, and the review of the 350d allowed me to make an informed decision about my purchase. I visit here almost daily to learn more and more about my rediscovered hobby and can only say:

THANKS PHIL and all the other helpful users!

Jo

After reviewing my previous posts in this thread, and those of others with an opposing view, I have changed my mind.

I now want:

1. The review immediately!
2. Free Healthcare, and I want a check-up tomorrow, all tests.
3. Better Job starting tomorrow, and 4 week vacation starting Monday

4. The moon to rise now, so I don't have to wait till later to practice my moon shots. ;)
