G2 Production Hold?

I've been trying to buy a G2 since just before Christmas. Nobody seems to have them in stock. One reputable dealer said Canon was telling them not to expect new shipments until February. This leads me to wonder if there might be some kind of production hold.

Has anyone experienced a problem with their G2 that necessitated a return to Canon for repair? The only problem I recall reading about on this forum was a problem with the LCD overheating.

Can anyone comment on this? Moreover, does anyone know of a good source for the G2, in stock at a reasonable price (i.e., $750 - $800)?

Thanks... Tim

LCD overheating certainly isn't a common issue. The LCD does get hot on extended use (apparently normal) but never stops operating properly.

I would imagine the stock problems are less to do with a production hold and more to do with demand outstripping supply. The G2 has proved a very popular camera.

Hi Tim,

I purchased my G2 here: http://www.normancamera.com

They were great and above-board! They may still have them in stock.

Good luck!

I got my G2 from B&H last week before they apparently ran out. They were selling it for $750.

Canon had a pre-christmas promotion on the S40 and G2 knocking about £60 ($85) off the list price.

Most stores have sold out over in the UK.

But I have been told stock should be back to normal by the end of Jan.

I am assuming this camera is worth waiting for, If you have your heart set on a G2 be patient, the wait will be worth it.

Epperson Photo (eppersonphoto.com) has them for a little more...$824...in stock.

Amazon has it in stock. It's a little more expensive - $899. But they are offering free shipping on it right now. I guess it depends on how badly you want it right away! :-)

No.. I dont believe that is the case, at the moment Canon is selling G2 like hotcakes, It's a great camera.... I had to wait quite a when I ordered my camera.

They are not unreputable. I called them. Despite what the web page says they are out of stock.
just how are crutchfield, 800.com, ritz, pictureline.com, pc
connection, and a few others unreputable?

No production hold.
Just Canon caught with their pants down.
Not being able to keep up with demand is hardly being caught with your pants down. It happens to many products and it's a great situation to be in for a manufacturer as it means a product is more successful than anticipated. Being able to supply all demand at any time is the ideal situation, but not always possible, especially when sales are heavily clumped like they are over Christmas and the January Sales. The key is whether supply can be ramped up to meet the demand without compromising quality control. A perennial issue in many industries. I think most people would rather wait a few weeks for a properly QC'd product than buy something rushed out to meet demand.
