I am about to purchase a G2, one quick question...

I am presuming the G2 doesn't come with a separate charger.

Is it advisable to invest in one, I just feel a little unhappy at charging my battery in the camera for the following reasons.

1. Lack of being able to use the camera if I own a spare battery.
2. Don't feel 100% safe about charging a battery in the camera.

Martin I posted these concerns several weeks ago.

The response was that in camera charging is relatively safe and nobody that did have problems responded..

I still could not help but thinking of all those electronics being effected by an errant power surge etc. and also the freedom of not having the camera tied up while recharging.

I put up the extra money $220 Australian(1/2 this for $US) and now have piece of mind.
Yes paranoid me.

i have heard numerous good reports about the Lenmar "Mach 1" super-duper charger, costs $70 USD at batterybarn.com and charges the BP-511 fully in about 45minutes!!!

i'd spend the bit extra to get that. you can also swap plates on it to charge a lot of other camcorder-style Li-Ion batteries, and it's AC/DC so you can use it at home or in the car, and it's got a built- in transformer so you can use it in any country (100v-250v) with just a cheap adaptor plug (to change the shape of the pins, not change the actual power type)

JONLG- which charger did you get? for $220? i'm going to get the mach1 for $76 USD including shipping ($146 AUD)

(batterybarn are very reliable-i bought the AC Delco AC-511 battery, 1500mAh versus BP-511's 1100mAh, from them for $43 USD... took just 7 working days to get here. not bad. and still cheaper than the local 3rd party "Inca" BP-511 equivalent, plus more power!)

I bought this one and never regretted it. Comes with a car adaptor, and, as an added bonus fitted my JVC DV camcorder battery as well :-).

Hi Warren
I have Canons CR560 accessory charger.
But no G2.
G2 maybe here late this coming week or week after.

Been told that processing thru customs and then allocation by Canon Australia is the current steps in the delivery of the G2.

I have this funny feeling that a Pro 90 revision is going to show its head soon, which may be more to my liking.

The camera's external power supply isolates sufficiently from power surges. It will take the hit, not your camera.

BTW, BP511 equivalent for A$62.50 is available in Australia from http://www.wescomponents.com/ (code: VBCL715H)

Cheers,
Kola

Well that maybe Kola but I did say I was paranoid.

I too have been considering buying the AC delco battery, but I am concerned about the "more power" aspect. Does anyone know if this safe for the camera?

Hey john, good to hear your G2 should be finally making it to you! :)

Re: a successor to the Pro90, i really wouldn't hold my breath on that one... everyone is hoping for one, but that don't mean it's gonna happen. Pro90 sales were pretty abysmal and when you compare them to the way the G2 is selling like hotcakes, i'd expect a 5MP "G2.5" before a "Pro100". plus the problems with the lens and a bigger CCD on the Pro90...

they would have to completely redeisgn the lens. very costly and probably not justified considering the poor Pro90 sales. a real shame, because if the pro90 was 3.3MP or 4MP it would sell like nuts (well, i'd buy it anyway). but 2.6MP just doesn't cut it.

plus even if they do announce it, they often do this in advance of initial shipments so it may not make it to australia by may, june or july- can you wait that long? and when it does get here it will probably be priced at $2500 +, i'd rather save $800 and get a G2 now...

good luck! let me know when you get it!
