Well...I ordered the F30 last week and it came today. Didn't get a chance to play with it yet. This is supposed to be a birthday gift for a relative. I also just ordered the F20 today. So I will have both cameras available to compare. I will keep one for myself but not sure which one at this point. The relative is a newbie to photography and has no experience with cameras period. So they will be happy with either cam. I just wanted a pocket cam to carry around.

If anyone wants to see any comparisions on specific aspects of both cameras, let me know. Maybe this has already been done.

Actually,

When I pulled into the garage this evening after work..I had a little friend waiting for me. I unpackaged the F30..put in the battery and set to macro mode and zoomed in from a foot or two away.100% crop no PP.

I want to gather comparison pictures in regular daylight situations. In particular I do not know if f20 has any improvements over f30 as f20 comes after f30. Any comments can be very helpful from your assessment. I am a potential buyer of either a f30, f20 and s6500. In other words, I will be interested in getting the one that you keep for yourself :-). I am betting on the f30 but not sure until you have both in your hands.

One noted problem in reading on negatives about f30 is on occasional over-exposed pictures, I wonder if that issue is less in f20 or if it is not an issue at all with manual compensation.

Best regards,
Hin

The expectation is that image quality will be identical. Of course, the F20 has no aperture priority and shutter speed priority 'manual' modes.

One difference is the resolution (not size) of the LCDs. I'd be interested to hear your assessment of the LCD quality between the two, and how noticeable it is. I've played with the F20 a bit and thought the LCD looked good, but I didn't have a F30 next to it for comparison.

Having owned both the F20 and F30 at the same time, the LCD quality between the two is negligible. However, both are marginally better than the F10.

F20 questions:

1. In addition to the auto ISO setting can the various ISO settings (100-1600) be set manually for the different scene modes?

2. Can you view the aperture and shutter settings on the LCD display at the time the photo is taken?

I understand that both of these options are available in the F30.

I would love to see "identical" outdoors shots (bright ) if possible as that is my only concern with both cameras . Thanks !

I am still hoping to know if f20 has any improvements over f30 in term of picture quality in daylight. I know that f20 is a stripped down from f30 without manual control on shutter and aperture, lesser LCD. But what about the plus side on things -- any improvements over f30?

Thanks,
Hin

Not based on any scientific facts just on usage. I have had both the F30 & F20 and would have to say the F20 handles outdoor situations much better that the F30. There were times with my F30 that the LCD would be a complete wash with blown highlights, have not had that experience yet with the F20. I will try this weekend to test the F20 in more depth.

Ok...my F20 just arrived yesturday and I will try and put together something that will hopefully answer your question(s)..

as I'm in the market for one of them.

I like 'L', 'USM', and 'IS'.

Another thing I'm interested in is whether the F20 can shoot video
in low light as well as the F30. The F30 is at least two stops
better in low light compared to my F700. I wonder if the F30 is 2/3
stops better than the F20, since the F20 tops out at ISO 2000.

Am I right that fuji f30/f20 both use motion jpeg and that takes up storage space and you run out of memory soon in 512 Mb xD card -- how many minutes?. But I do think that f30/f20 can take very good video in low light setting similar to its picture quality -- caveat, I can't qualify my thinking as I don't have either in possession. I will love to see some posting of f30/f20 for video. I have my video links in all of my flickr page done in casio ex-z750 tagged with 'video link'

http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=video+link&w=24174812%40N00&s=int .

But my casio lacks in low light situation and videos usually comes out yellow and grainy in low light shooting especially in indoor. And it will be great to see f30 or f20 videos samples for indoor.

The video should be the same for both the F20 and F30. The output file is in .avi format. There are video clips posted here, but you will have to search this forum for them. The videos are actually quite clear and do well in low light situations. As with any video cam, you have to hold it steady. As for total recording time; on a 1G XD card, it will hold approx 15 minutes at 640X480 @ 30 fps. I don't know what it is at the lower resolution as I never used it.

Best regards,
Mike

Well, it's the same sensor. However, the F30 may allow a higher gain during recording, which would allow a brighter (albeit noisier) image during low light.

I'm going to try and get some test shots in today. I will have both cameras side by side on mini tripods and fire off some shots to compare sample daylight exposures. I will also grab some LCD screen shots and shoot a little video also. If you want the camera settings in a specific way just let me know. I'll start off with both in their default settings on auto..

Sounds Great ! If you are taking requests, please consider a couple of Indoor Portraits (AUTO) in addition to bright, outdoor shots IF you can

I'm especially interested in seeing if the 20 really does do a better job outdoors, i.e. blown highlights and such as treaks has indicated may be the case.

Thanks

So was the F20 so good that you died and went to Heaven, thus robbing you of your ability to post your findings?
