Hello all,

Just can't seem to find a battery meter, or way of gauging how much battery power I have through my Canon A630. I'm using rechargable NiMH batteries, and haven't needed to recharge yet, after much usage and time - battery life is so good - but I have to be near expired I'm thinking.

Can anyone with an A630 assist?

If this model does not have a dedicated meter per se - is there any other tell tale signs battery life may be waning? (Besides the obvious signs and it's too late etc)

This camera is such a great performer...

Like the previous A6X0 series and many other models there is no meter to warn you of remaining battery life. For the record you may test and take pictures till they deplete to give you an idea but that depends on whether you use the LCD, how often you review, and how frequently you use flash.

Your best bet is to have a spare set of freshly charged batteries handy or a set of lithiums for emergencies.

mmm....I see - thank you Hank

How hard can it be though to add this much needed feature? I'd gladly sacrifice a host of other special features on this camera for a battery/power indicator or meter. Everything else I have, from my tiny mobile phone to my portable computer has a battery meter.

On my A610 the Power lamp will blink when the battery is low but there's no way to tell how much life is left and just prior to full depletion, the message "Change the batteries" will appear.

NiMH batteries die suddenly. Unlike other batteries its very difficult to detect the amount of power left via the voltage. I suspect that, recognising this, Canon didn't waste money developing or fitting a sophisticated detector. I carry a set of lithiums for my A620 but I've never used them because with 4x2500mA AA NiMH I know I can take over 300 shots a day without recharging.

Oscar, The A610 does have a battery indicator,, it is described on pages 16 and 105 of the 'Advanced' Userguide. RTM.

This makes sense actually - but still other products with NiMH batteries still manage it - but granted the price would perhaps be higher per unit as a result - don't know...
