Hi all

I'm in the UK and it seems all but impossible to find a battery, EN-EL3e , for the D80 - or at least one which doesn't cost £50. Anyone have any idea where one can be had? Same question for the plastic LCD cover?

cheers

Hi, I too am in the UK and have a D80 on order (I’ll buy a spare Nikon battery). You might want to search for Nikon battery problems; many have had serious difficulties with third party batteries involving expensive repairs. Most third party batteries seem to cost about £30, is the saving of £20 after a body price of £600 worth the risk?

Hi Jon

You have a point, only I haven't even seen a Nikon battery which I can buy - where do you plan on getting your spare?

I've seen this "thrid party batteries are dangerous/risky" line before. But, the only batteries that I've heard of that were being recalled were Nikon. Do you have examples of a major third party vendor such as Energizer, Duracell, or DigiPower having caused problems? I'm sure there's some off-brand stuff that may indeed be risky. But, I tried a couple of Google searches and couldn't find specific cases.

Just wanting to get the scoop on this. I've already bought a second Nikon battery for my D80 (from a local camera store).

Since April of this year, there has been three posts that I have read from people who had experienced problems caused by a third-party battery. Not sure what to search on to find the threads now.

It may not be that they pose a specific threat to the camera but I have seen performance tests of non-proprietary batteries and, even if they have a higher advertised capacity, they simply don't last as long.

Is it safe to use the EN-EL3 battery from my D100 in a D80 (purely as an emergency backup until I get hold of a spare ENEL3e battery).

Will the old series battery damage the D80?

The old batteries won't damage the camera, they just won't work. there is a third contact point on the enel3e batterie that sends information to the computer on the D80. You can use the new battery in your D70 though. You can also use your old charger to charge the enel3e.

"Because of some nasty problems with third-party batteries in recent years, the camera will accept only Nikon's official EN-EL3e batteries."

Better make sure they are Nikon then...

Does this include the Hahnel EN-EL3E Digital Camera Battery?
--
Is the Hahnel a third party brand? Then that answers your question.

Your better off ordering an OEM battery and just dealing with the wait time. Why would you even consider risking your d80 for a mear 20-$30 difference.

the Hahnel EL3e is intended as a direct replacement for the nikon battery.
it works in my D80 and the D80 grip .and shows correctly on the meter.
I have used Hahnel batteries for years , and have never had a bad one .

I did however have a bad EL3 Nikon battery that overheated and distorted in the housing of my D70 (how it did not damage the camera is a mystery , but it took ages extracting it from the housing .

Nikon replaced it of course , currently I am using a hahnel battery in the D70 and its worked fine since,

(well over a year), and lasts as long as the Nikon battery ever did. The replacement nikon gave me was an (e) version so along with the (e) that came with the D80 i am using the pair in the grip .
but please dont knock Hahnel Batteries without trying them .

I'm not trying to "knock" Hahnel batteries, what I am saying is why even "risk" going with a 3rd party battery if the price difference is a non factor? I dropped 1,800 on a D80 with Mb-d80 grip and a 18-200 VR lens. If anything were to go wrong Nikon WOULD NOT honor its warrenty if any damage were caused by a 3rd party battery. I'm sure the batteries are fine, but why risk it?

I understand your point about (why take the chance)

but look at it from my point of view after what happened with my last Nikon genuine battery , why should i take the chance with another Nikon battery .

after all Nikon make wonderful camera,s , and other optics and are world leaders . I will continue to use Nikon batteries , but i dont accept that just because a battery is from a 3rd party manufacturer that it must be inferior .

Hahnel make batteries , and battery devices and not much else , if they were making bad batteries they would have folded years ago , and they have been around for many years .

the truth is we all take a chance every time we charge a battery and use it no matter who make them , I am not trying to undermine Nikon i have the greatest of respect for them , just voicing my oppinion.

It's not 20 or 30 DOLLARS difference, it's 20 or 30 POUNDS (that's roughly 60 DOLLARS) - and while I take your point that 3rd party batteries might not be the preferred option, don't forget it's the NIKON battery which proved problematic in the past, not the Hahnel. Like Titchy said, Hahnel specialise in making batteries, they're not to be written off so easily simply because they're not Nikon.
