Hello there,

I'm from the Netherlands and new at this forum. I own an E10 and since a shortwhile also an S1. Both are great camera's

I would like to know which lens (not to expensive) you would advise me for, of course, the S1: I'm lthinking about a 28 - 200 mm zoom-lens.

Thanks in forward for your contribution.

With kind regards,

Jan

Hi Jan,
The one lens I use most often is the Nikon 24-120mm
1:3.5-5.6D. I do mostly people portraits and find this lens quite versitlie.
Cost will run about $500 new maybe alittle less. On the S1 it is a 36-180.
The 28-200 is a good choice also.

If you're talking about the Nikkor 28-200 f/3.5-4.5, keep in mind that is close to the WORST current Nikkor lens out there, in terms of optical rating from independent reviewers. I think PhotoDo gave it a 2.6! I've had Sigma zooms better than this lens.

Now, the worst of the best, may still be a decent lens but, just be aware of that fact if your spending money to own a Nikkor label.

In general, the more extreme the zoom, the lower the quality of the image.

My current favorite affordable lens is the Sigma 28-105 f/2.8-4 zoom lens. It's very bright and has a nice zoom range--great for portraits too with that nice aperture. I have found it to be sharp too.

I have a Nikkor 28-200 (bought it used for about $400 for my new S1 Pro a little over a year ago) and while I have read that it is the among the worst of the Nikon lenses, I have taken some fine pics with it and find it quite sharp with the S1 Pro

by Nik Sharpener I get very high sharpness scores as compared to some of my primes...to my eye the lens seems plenty sharp, particularly at the middle range of zooms

keep in mind that zoom lenses have a lot of variability in manufacture & that the smaller ccd to 35 mm film means the edges of the lens are not used, so some of the aberrations of the lens are not really as critical

autofocus on the Nikkor 28-200 is very slow, but I find it still a handy lens, especially when I don't want to carry a lot of lenses with me

Anthony;

I'm glad to see your brief review of the Sigma 28-105. I've been salavating over that and would like to have one.--Happy shooting;Mike Flood

jan,

I received as a gift, a Tokina 24-200 lens for my S1. I was doubtful at best, but the lens has turned out to be very good for the range that it has. On the S1, it is actually a 36-300 which is a bit more wide angle than a 28-200 would be. The sharpness is very good, surprising, but very good. It produces good color and contrast too. I have a few Nikkors, and I would use this lens more often for its versatility. I have made 13" X 19" prints using this lens already and they looked very good. I think you can buy this for about $375 on the internet.

Just bought a Nikkor 18-35 F3.5~4.5 zoom for my S1. It is one very sharp lens (been testing it out today). I plan to use that for general purpose photography, and my 50mm F1.8 is used for portraits. My Sigma 28-300 just died - dropped (sob!).

I'd loan you mine, but I need it today to practice shooting with some models. If it goes well today though, perhaps I'll post some shots so you can see how it does.

jan,

The 28-105mm Nikkor lens is a very, very good starter lens, considerably better than most zooms. I personally don't like extreme zooms very much, even though most good photographers can work around their limitations. The dealer who sold me an S-1 last year suggested the 28-105 and 70-300 Nikkor zooms, and I think that's a very reasonable and light starter kit (though the latter lens gets pretty shaky in quality past 250).

There are Sigma and Tokina lenses that occupy similar zoom ranges that are probably of equal or close to equal quality if you do your research (though quality control is likely to be more erratic), so I'm sure you'll get good bang for your buck no matter which direction you go.

If you shoot wide, the 18-35mm Nikkor is very good as well, though it does have a tendency to flare. You're probably not looking at prime lenses at this point, but their quality is exceptional, and good and (relatively) inexpensive ones are the 24mm 2.8 Nikkor (once I got this, my usage of the 18-35mm dropped dramatically), the 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 (small and cheap, though I'm not crazy about this focal length), and the 60mm 2.8 Micro Nikkor (a little more expensive, but very, very sharp, and a very good all-purpose lens for the S1).

Good luck,

Robert

Hello out there,

I would like to thank everybody for the contributions. I've decided to look for sigma 35 - 105 mm lens (saw a second hand lens!) and maybe a 70 - 300 mm.

Hello,

I've finnaly decided to go for a Tamron-lens and bought today a Tamron 28 - 200 mm (F3.8 - 5.6 asph. XR (IF) Macro lens; it is a TIPA-award winner) at a local store for 430 euro. The first impressions are good also the feeling, but it needs some force to handle the zoom. For the (near) future I want to spent some money for a good wide angle and more telezoom power (400 mm).

Again thanks to everyone,

Jan
