My 10D will not auto focus.

I was working at home on some stuff, put on the 100-300 L and the auto focus didn't work. ???????????????? Then, all of the sudden, the top display went blank. Ah, need fresh battery. Put in fresh battery and wonder of wonders, I now have auto focus. But wait, after a short time, it went away again. Different lens, same thing, another different lens, same thing, fresh battery and still the same thing.

Any ideas??????????????
 
Check the little switch on the barrel of your lens? If that is in manual focus mode - the camera won't autofocus ...

But it turned out that I had some how turned the autofocus off. I discoverd today that the auto focus worked in auto and P so then I started thinking about some changes I had made in the camera menu. Reset everything and auto focus is back.

Does anybody know what I could have done to lose the auto focus?
 
You probably had switched the AF to the * button. I think that's CF4.
