forgive me if repeat post.

new to dslr (d80) considering nikkor 50 f1.4 my zoom lens has no aperture ring, it's set by command ring. With aperture ring lens, do i just set desired aperture and camera compensates with shutter speed ? Can 'auto' mode be used? or do i need to set it to aperture priority? Confused. Thanks.

Well, it's been a long time since I've used a non-G lens, but IIRC...

You put the aperture ring on the smallest aperature (highest f/ number). It's marked in Orange. Last 2 AF lenses I owned (original version 28/2 and 50/1.8 AF) had a lock to keep them there. Locking the aperture is optional, but highly recommended.

If you don't do this, you will get an error ("FEE" on most other Nikons, I'm not sure about the D80). If you do it correctly, the lens will behave exactly like your G lens(es).

Good luck with your new lens!
