I'm still learning, but I purchased an SD800 IS yesterday at Best Buy.

I figured I'd post a few pics, although I think I could have done better, unfortunately, the cool Macro shots I took of some flowers can't be uploaded to flickr, so I will have to figure out something else to upload photo's too.

Anyways, maybe someone will enjoy these.

Thanks

Hi thanks for these pictures, could you retake some without the AiAF focus system on. It looks to me as if the 800is has the same problem as the 700is whereby the focus system is better switched off.

You will find it under the last menu from memory...

It has three options:
On
Off
Face Detect

I had it on Face Detect

I don't know what that means. Does that mean it is only on if a face is there? I notice when there is a face present, it focuses on the face automatically.

I will try it with the off setting in a little while.

Thanks.

i'd slect off, AiAF es very random and most agree is better avoided, face detect is supposed to be for pictures with people in them, where it is supposed to focus on the face areas, i'd suggest that is only any ise for group pics, but overall in my experience you are better off with the AiAF off.

Cheers

So far, (I have been playing with the camera non-stop), It has been very hard to fool the camera into going into the face detection mode.

There have been a few situations where it shows something as being a face, and it isn't. There are also other times (for example, trying to take a picture of my sisters dog's face) where it wouldn't detect a face at all.

In lower light (like indoors at night) it rarely ever activated the face detection.

I also took some video with the camera, and it does very well outdoors, and even indoors, it does reasonably well.

Hi there, thanks for the latest batch, was the AiAF off on these? I know its a pain but if you get a chance to take some landscape pics without it id be very greatful, im seriously considering an 800is myself.

AiAf was set to Face Detection on all the pictures.

I'll take some in a little while, I will try to get a few of the same shots to see if it made a difference.

Took some amazing pictures while driving down the road at 60 mph, and going over a fairly bouncy bridge, was still able to get some nice pictures of a local river and such.

This is my first digital camera that I actually purchased. I usually shot pictures with an old 4 mp camera that my sister gave to me. This is certainly a very nice upgrade from that.

I'll see what I can do.

I'm impressed with it though.

Really appreciate it. The more pictures and circumstances i can see the easier it will be to see its ability. Thanks

Is it just me, or do these look pretty bad?

Remember this is Canon's newest "latest and greatest" camera, even if it is in the compact P&S class. I'm not exactly blown away.... don't think I'll be getting this one.

Actually to me they look better than some of the other SD800 images that have been posted (which are horrendous). These are "ok" snapshots, but there's nothing really outstanding in them. I think this camera may be satisfactory for casual snapshots, but I've yet to see anything approaching a "WoW" type image. Small cameras are capable of rendering some incredible images and perhaps we just have to wait a bit longer. I realize it's still very early in the game. I don't think the photographer has done anything wrong. I'd like to see more images.

I think they are very nice. Did you have any special settings on? Had you tweaked any of the settings in "My colors"? Or was this on auto?? Thanks.

Yes, all the pictures are bad, not just image quality, but also the framing, everything. I haven't seen such bad quality pictures in this forum for a while, which lead me to think that it is more like a problem with the shooter than the camera itself. By no means this camera is at its best with these pictures. Well, not everybody can take good picture with 1Ds.

Bottom line, I won't make any decision on this camear base on these pictures.

I think many of the pictures are over-esposed and a little soft. Also in some pictures there is very strong corner softness (esp in the firs message)

These pictures do not look ghreat, but it's still tricky to define if it is the camera, user or a combination of both. I am inclined to wait a bit longer before making any decision, as i'd be flabergasted if the sd800 is substancially worse than the sd700 (just cannot believe that Canon would bother releasing it...)

How RUDE!!

Actually, I've seen worse.

The first thing the original poster wrote was that he was learning.

There is nothing wrong with the pictures from the standpoint that they are so very typical of those taken by someone with a brand new camera. When someone gets a new camera they typically shoot anything in sight, without framing, playing with the exposure settings, etc.

If you really looked at the images you'd see that's exactly what the OP did. I mean, really, how many people take time to frame a shot of a TV antennae on top of a roof!

I very much appreciated that JMowery took time to share the photos. Assuming the camera is a keeper, I'm confident he will do just fine with it.

Fortunately, there are more people around these forums that are willing to help each other learn a new camera than those who criticize.
