Yesterday I visited Photokina, as I didn't want to lug around all day with my D200+lens I took some pictures with my fuji F10.

It was my first visit to this fair and I was very impressed. I stayed about 7-8 hours and tried to visit as much stands as possible including most of the major software brands. The presentations of new (pro)version of ACDSee (which I like basically as picture explorer)and DXO took my attention, Dxo is really revolutionary "users friendly" and effective at the same time with some applications.

The presence of Nikon was remarkable, everywhere... which are signs of a company doing very well at present I guess...

I came in trough entrance east, the allover organisation of the fair pleased me very well...

First stand I visited was sigma, curious for there SD14, Phil's review will tell me more than what I could try out there eventhough you were enabled to put your own CF card in the camera and take some shots...

Arriving at Nikon's, lots of D80's all over the place with different lenses to try, though not the new 70-300 AFS VR(which was only presented in the glass showcase).

The rest of the Nikon stand was extremely complete with possibilities to try out in a very professional way all kind of lenses(200-400mm as well) on all kind of bodies...very tempting to make you spend even more money in gear as most of us do already right now...

I asked a Nikon representative what is the origin of the difference in noise and IQ output between D80 and D200 while having the same sensor... I was a little amazed when he answered me they are NOT the same sensors, aiming on the importance of 2channel vs 4 channel...

Passing by several other stands I visited Fuji for some news on the S5pro which seems on the outside only a relabeled D200 with inside the S3pro sensor. What I do not understand is why Fuji can't deliver this camera right now yet, finally putting a 3 years old (great) sensor in another body can't take that long...(just my opinion)

At Tamron I tried their newest 18-250mm lens on a Canon 20D(while the Nikon version wasn't available yet) and I was pleasantly surprised by the quick AF (I had a Tamron 18-200 myself and I changed it for the nikkor 18-200 mostly because of the slow AF). They also told me that the newer version has improved concerning to image quality parameters such as disortion...strange, even a bigger focal range and less disortion???

One of the nicest contacts I had was at the stand of Nikonians, very nice people with an immense knowledge about Nikon gear.

Yes! I'll be there again in two years,...I hope.

I've been there too. Did you think it was very quiet too? I was wondering, just out of curiosity, if it was either the enlarged space or the lack of visitors.

Hi Leen!

I can't compare with other years because it was my first visit to Photokina but I also felt it wasn't "overcrowded"...yet. I wouldn't like to be there on Saturday or Sunday though...

Hi Leen,

Was there yesterday (wednesday) and also thought that it was quite to. Some stands had much more visitors and some almost no visitors. Maybe it's because it's so big and I think that if we could count the people being in there that it would be a high number. I think that the interest for such events will decrease in the future because with the information found on Internet we already know and have seen almost everything that you can find there. I think that it will continue to attract traders, photo website makers, journalists.

nice to see a different perspective! Fotomat
You're welcome, it was fun to make this short report and it keeps reminding me about a great experience. If I have the opportunity, I'll be there for at least two full days in 2008.

I visited the photokina today. I have been there twice over the years. First time was when the S1 came out and then again today. The photo of the photographer below, was the guy working with the S5 at the Fuji stand. I didn’t get anything new out of him about the S5. The prints from the S5 were impressive. The photographer did say that there are no more S3 in Germany for sale. I must have looked surprised because he went on to say that they had dumped them quickly earlier this summer because of new laws passed in German that made the S3 illegal to sale. I don't know about that but he said something about not eating them and you should be ok. Anyone know what he was talking about?

I´m afraid you are right, It might be possible this is one of the last Photokinas ever after 58 years. In the 'old days' most manufacturers waited with the launch of their products till the Photokina, nowadays they publish their news all year round.

I think two years is way too long now, twice a year would be the most logical answer to the speed of developements. Two years was the speed of Zeiss Ikon, now it is the age of Sony. A few years ago it was unbelievable one could touch a new Nikon, now I´ve felt the weight of it and thus decided to buy a D80 next to my S3 and I´m waiting for an S6. This would have been impossible 4 years ago.

Yes, the Nikon body which is used for the Fuji S3 has too much lead in it. The camera can't be sold in the Eurpean Union anymore. This has been communicated a few months ago somewhere here on dpreview and other sources. But there is no danger for the photographer. As long as you don't eat parts of the camera.

Best wishes,
Markus

I did see these lenses, I consider buying one.
Yep! Me too :) After I sold my Nikkor 20-35 f/2.8, which had worked as my kit-lens, I found that my new 17-35 f/2.8 was just a tad bit too heavy and large to be used for that purpose...

The new Tokina 16-50 f/2.8 shares almost the same dimensions and weight with the Nikkor 20-35 - and to me it means the same as perfection for my use :) I can still use the 17-35 in landscape use on my D80 and film F3...

Did you get to handle the lens? Did it feel as sturdy as it looks? Here's the new hammered finish (is that the correct word?):

When I was a child, I used to play with little molded soldiers made of pure lead. Tin was the usual material, but some - like my grandfathers - were made of lead also. I had hundreds of them, and played war for hours and hours. I loved to set up armys on the floor and make war :-)

I was aware that I should not eat with my fingers after playing with them, but after all I am not so sure I respected that.

I am not aware that I had any bad effects from it later.

I guess some of the modern health care stuff is just pure paranoia.
