I never did .. It's not good just for ground shots, but also for waist-level shots. I use it on about 30% of everyday shots, like poeple, buildings .. I just have more options to find the best framing.

The biggest problem of G7 ? Name ! .. if A640 or A710 was called G7, there would be less fuzz.

Another problem off all that bunch ? 10MP ? Who the hell needs it ? 4MP with no noise would be enough for me.

I do.
I use a camera mostly for travel and never take pictures of mushrooms.
Never ever needed swivel.
Perhaps taking pictures from other than eye level would give more impact to your travel shots as well, whether it is overhead or ground level. The swivel LCD allows you perspectives without getting into contortioned positons.
After having one, I'd never get another camera without it.

I love looking up at mushrooms :)

I used the Pro1 swivel to get these shots

and for most of my flower shots, swivel makes it easier too.

Amen to that .. anyway, it's just my personal opinion. You don't
like it ? Don't buy it .. it's that simple.
For Igor,

Even if you normally don't use it, fold it back like the conventional LCD's or use the viewfinder, but when you really need it to compose a shot it's invaluable. And when the camera is not used there is no better protection on the market for protection when it's folded away.

and even if you wanted to take pictures of mushrooms, its really not that hard to take a blind shot of something, i do it all the time, sometimes it requires a couple tries, or cropping in photoshop if something isn't perfectly centered.. but its no big deal. i wouldnt complain if i had one though, especially since it makes it really handy for protecting the lcd when the camera is not in use and you don't have a case.

They are delicious! At least some of them. :-) Great shots, by the way!

This thread should have been titled "Usefulness of Swivel LCD" or something like that.

There is no one who doubts swivel lcds, they are only ever an advantage, never a disadvantage.

No comment on pictures because of the silly title. Maybe I'll start a thread called "Who said the A620 was rubbish" along with some images.

Sorry, but I doubt swivel LCDs. For my personal usage style, they are never an advantage. Granted, there are only minor disadvantages, but they do make the camera a bit bigger, and they are just one more thing to go wrong (unlikely as this may be). And, of course, they probably make the camera a tad more expensive.

For example, I wish the A710IS were slightly thinner, so I'm certainly glad they didn't make it marginally thicker by adding a swivel LCD.

I realize that lots of people feel strongly about this, so I wanted to post to remind you all that this is a very personal preference. As somebody said earlier in this thread, if you like swivels, buy a camera with a swivel. If you don't, don't.

Questions: is there anybody who thinks swivel is not important but who has camera with it ?

Mushrooms and flowers "from below" are not things I care to ever photograph. People, landscapes, building interiors, autos, and travel are things that interest me. I also believe one can be creative without this feature. I like my Pro1 and A610 but I didn't buy them for this feature. I would gladly give up a movable LCD for less noise, a decent optical viewfinder, and perhaps IS (like the new 710), etc. In fact, I don't shoot video, use RAW, and rarely use any scene modes either. I just want a nice camera, with a great lens, that can take great pics without a lot of fanfare.

I am NOT knocking people who like these things. To each his own.

I loved the T&S LCD on my Pro 1. Unfortunately, the minuses of the Pro 1 finally outweighed the pretty much single plus of the LCD, at least for me. I wish my 20D had one, but I just make do. As another poster pointed out, you sometimes need to take more than one shot to get the right framing for low-angle shots, but it's digital-who cares? Add a right-angle finder and these shots become a bit easier.

dog photos ! Most 'pet' photos are from above with the dog looking up.

The tilt LCD gets great expressions of dogs' faces in a whole different happy mode !
(just wanted to suggest another subject other than mushrooms)

.....candid shots when the subject isn't aware of being photographed by having the camera in your lap or on a table facing away from you. At least your not sticking your nose into the viewfinder making it obvious.

The swivel LCD is like air conditioning.....it's not necessary to survive but after having it I wouldn't consider a house or car without it.
