You find strange things in the woods!

22, in college, wants to take a photography course but they require
a dslr. That's where I had to draw the line :-).
I see why!
I'm fighting low energy level as well as slow shutter speeds. I'm
sure there is plenty I can find. I'm afraid to put it on, will my
fill flash work, should I use it, shut up ShudderBug, put the dang
thing on, get off the computer, go try it out. You wouldn't
believe the list of things I should do to get used to the 100-400,
got some excellent advice BTW. I'm afraid my pitchers (deliberate)
won't be as nice as yours.
Just put it on and go out and have fun with it. Sometimes you can even use the onboard flash........you have to make do sometimes with what you have on hand.
That's what I was afraid of :-(. Boy do I have a long way to go .
. .I am having such fun with that 100-400 when I can get out with
it.
I can handold my 400mm most of the time at 1/400 pretty good, sometimes slower if I have something to brace my arm on. Monopod and remote shutter release helps a lot too.
Just to make you happy, I'll try to get few test shots before the
weekend is over and get back to you re the S105 if you promise,
cross your heart skip the hope to die not to laugh! I don't know
how to set it up. Don't tell me. I'll surprise you. Then you can
kindly tell me what I did wrong.
I might not KNOW what you did wrong, if anything! Still trying to learn myself. Looking forward to seeing what you get. Better to try that thing out in case you have a bad copy.
And I don't want to have to take time out to clean the sensor
filter!!!
I've never had a big problem with dust from changing lenses, and I change them a lot! Mostly keep the macro lens on the 300D now that I have another camera though.

I thought the general rule for non-IS is 1/focal length. So at 400mm, you would want 1/400s shutter speed or faster for hand-held shots. Then IS can give you a top or two below that.

Is this incorrect?

cool shots, how did you use the flash, in-camera, external etc ?
Used external flash. The white one was with the flash on a bracket,
with the omnibounce on it.
Now I see I am going to need a bracket or something. Took some wedding shots and need to get rid of shadows, thought ceiling too high to bounce so angle the flash 45 degrees with my paper diffuser. Now I read about an L-bracket that will work both in landscape and portrait mode, supposed to eliminate the shadows, Canon brand, not marketed in the US but the UK, Singapore, only source is ebay and rather costly. Plus there was a twisty cord and I haven't ascertained at this point whether you have to buy that separately or not. I'm not in a big hurry, have to finish paying for the new lenses first, but am thinking ahead.

What kind of bracket doe you use and would it eliminate shadows (mostly against walls, open shots good)?
The purple one was taken with my 400mm lens and the external flash
mounted on the shoe with a beamer on it. (that just happened to be
what I had when I saw that one in the woods (was bird hunting).
When I walked past that, I backed up and took a picture of it.
External and mounted on shoe I understand, what is a beamer?
btw, here is one than zipped by my camera :-)
Now that's neat!! What is it, do you know? Never seen a creature
quite like that, and I thought we had some strange ones around
here! You REALLY do find strange things in the woods, don't you?
LOL
Looks like a snail to me. Pretty thing and nice photo.

I use the stroboframe flip bracket. I bought it mainly to get more light on the subjects when shooting macros. You have to have an off shoe cord to use a bracket (it's kind of pricey for what it is, but it's the only thing that works) My flash is mounted on a small ball head so I can angle the flash where I need it.

I don't know about eliminating shadows in the situation you mentioned. Maybe somebody with experience with that type of shooting will jump in and give you some advice on that one.

The beamer is a flash extender. I use it to give me more light when shooting birds mainly. Here is a link that shows it.

I'll kick that around and ruminate on it. I'm the one-size-fits-all type, and that isn't going to work in this "business".

Thanks for the info and link. I'll see what I can put together. First I will just make do with what I have, like I always do, and go from there.

I think they are called Iberian Slugs, we normally have them in black, but these brown/orance specises has invaded the country over the past 10 years.

But they are quite gross :-)

Make sure you keep your shutter speed up when shooting these guys. Dont want to get any motion blur.....

Thanks a lot for that info. I had no idea what they were, just thought they were pretty when I ran across them. I had looked for them but with no success.

What you mean, I did pan it, notice the background.
