Hi, I'm just starting to learn CS2, been reading classroom in a book by R. Brown. But need this picture in less time than I have to learn.

Hoping someone is willing to try some talent on this and let me know the steps. A tall order I'm sure. I would not ask this but I want to send the picture to my nephew who is on his way to Iraq. He had five days to be with his bride before heading off. If you need the full size jpeg or CR2 raw file I can email it to you.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Jonathon,

Can you post a "link" to the full size image here? That way several of us can try to help. The ole two heads better than one thingy...

Also, you did not mention what you would like done to the image.

Well, I'm really looking for advice as to what should be done.

I'm sure it needs to be crop, usm and after that I don't know what to do to make it "pop". Really looking for your thoughts on what amount of usm and any other treatment to be applied. I just learning and have yet to master the simple skill of how much usm to apply.

Here is a before and after... Fairly simple edit with curves (gray point and added contrast) and levels (tweaked RGB channel sliders and white point slider) to remove the slight yellow/green color cast. Then sharpened with USM (200, 0.7, 4) and saved as a level 10 jpeg. Almost forgot, I also ran it through the PT Lens plug-in in CS2 to remove some of the barrel distortion.

I posted the full size original file, a couple of 8x10 crops and a blurred vignette in this directory ( http://www.pbase.com/jaopictures/wedding_edit ) on my pbase site. The directory is hidden, so you will need the direct link to access it. Just click on it, then view the "original" size. I'll leave them up for several days, so you can just download them from there.

I would never of thought to use that much in usm nor would I know or realize to use pt for lens. Thank you very much. I've downloaded the pics.

I'm going to work on my copy to see how close I come to yours. I'm going to learn a lot from this. Again Thank You.

A closer cropped alternative.
  • I masked out the subjects and adjusted levels to darken the background.
  • Added some light behind heads to enhance contrast between hairline and background.
  • Some cloning and noise reduction to smooth skin.
  • Some paint on a blank soft light layer to brighten the grooms face a little.
  • USM for local contrast (about 18/35/0) and again to sharpen (about 40/1.0/0).

Jonathan,
I took a pretty straightforward approach to your picture.

1. Crop the image.

2. Clone a bit, to construct the edge of the bride’s gown that was obscured by the railing.

3. Extract the couple generally following Russell Brown’s method of constructing a mask from one of the image channels. I chose the red channel as it showed the greatest contrast between the subjects and the background. Nevertheless, there were several areas where it was difficult to say what deserved to be called foreground or background. So, I used my best judgement in those areas.

4. Worked on the extracted couple using the healing brush to remove facial blemishes, a selective color layer to reduce somewhat the shine on the couple’s faces, some PWL and a levels adjustment layer to wrap up the extraction.

5. The background is comprised of several layers. Its main feature, the rose window, comes from http://www.digitalfilmtools.com/light/lightdown.php .

The other layers construct and color the background using standard PS techniques and masks.

6. Finished with a bit of high-pass sharpening.

I have the PSD file and would be happy to send it to you if you’d care to examine and play with it.

Best,

Marty, what you explained is way above my knowledge. I'm still in the baby steps of pp work.
If you don't mind, Please send the file.

I also see you and I are in the same state. I'm in western MA, near Springfield.

Thanks.
