Hey folks, hunger for some mushroom steak? A fellow photographer informed me that this large Puffball mushroom is quite edible but only before it has spored. I was told it can be sliced up like steaks and fried in some butter and garnished to taste. It certainly is large enough to feed a number of people.

I walked by this big white blob a few times without realizing what it was. From a distance it looked just like a deflated volleyball someone had discarded. In the picture below I placed a cell phone in front of it to give an idea of its size.

Taken with 30D + 100-400L IS and Internal flash.

Thanks for sharing that mushroom! I recently had the opportunity to hunt for mushrooms in Colorado and I believe we came across one or two of these. Not being great mushroom hunters (although we did buy a book on mushrooms just for reference) we were mainly hunting for chantrelles which we found. Had I known these were a possible meal, I might have lingered longer :) It's a fun sport if you know what you're doing. jstrong

Some taken early at photography and some recent. Please comment on what you like and what you do not. Jano

Thanks for looking Jano. While out photographing I run into quite a few people interested in mushrooms and there are a variety where I live, including the "magic" mushroom. The large Puffball is the biggest I have seen so far. It is edible but only before it has spored. The one I photographed unfortunately has already spored because it is slightly hollow sounding when knocked on. How do you eat the Chantrelles? Here is a link to an alphabetical list of mushrooms (with pictures): http://www.morelmushroomhunting.com/species_list.htm

The problem with "mushrooms" is that the difference between edible and non-edible is often also the diffence between safe and extremely toxic. Every year, people die from eating what they thought were safe and tastey mushrooms. If you're not an expert, or under the guidance of an expert, be EXTREMELY carefull before eating any fungus.

As my grandfather used to say, "You can eat any mushroom...once." I would never bet my life or those of my family that a particular wild mushroom is completely safe, so only eat mushrooms available from the supermarket. :-)

That goes for all plants and berries, yet people are happy to eat raspberries, blackberries, apples, pears and all manner of other things that they find in hedgerows.

All you have to do is learn what you are looking for. In the UK there are 2500 species of "toadstool" type fungus and only 8 of them will kill you if you eat a whole one. Compare that to the number of berries and leaves that will knock you off sharpish.

Not saying you should eat everything you find, but it is a shame that people are too scared to learn about an excellent source of food.

We have big white mushrooms that pop up on our lawn regularly. They look just like giant "button" mushrooms that I buy at the supermarket. When I pull them up, they even smell good. BUT, I throw them in with the lawn trash and wash my hands afterwards.

That's one mushroom you're not going to mix up with any poisonous ones. I ate some a few weeks back. They're best when they're still smallish (below football sized) and firm. Tastewise they're a bit bland compared to the lovely meatiness of a parasol mushroom or the crunchy, nutiness of a Cep - my favourite.

I had a similar mushroom in my front yard a few years ago. It literally appeared overnight. I don't have any pics as good as yours, but here's one taken with my old Olympus point and shoot.

Although I wasn't as smart as the rest of you and show the size by comparing it with a cell phone or a ruler but nevertheless it was huge.

I first asked my husband what in the world would a volleyball be doing here in the pasture field. But when looking on a realized it was a mushroom.
Scary beast, I felt......lol I would estimate it was about 6-8 inches round.
With a big dent in the side, like someone had kicked it.....lol
