A Virus??

via a forum or email to take him to that level of registry edits.

Hi there
I take your point but I was thinking more at this stage of just switching things off.

If the OP just noses around some of these programs a bit and looks for 'tools' or 'preferences' or 'options' he'll usually find commands such as 'load this program at startup' or 'automatic update'. Just unchecking those items could also make a big difference.

The thing is, the trojans slow down your computer by ringing out and the firewall blocking it, so they keep trying and hence tie up increasing amounts of activity. Well some of these things will do have the same effect .

Also, if you use a progm like jv16, it'll give you a list of start up items and ask you if you want to remove them or disable them. My advice would be disable and then see if everything works before removing them a couple of weeks later.

Ian,

As to this and your previous post, I appreciate your input. I really am afraid at this point to do anything too technical as I am by no means an expert and would be afraid of doing any more harm. I quickly went to that link last night but didn't have a chance to read much about it. It lists a few programs, whcih do you recommend?:
jv16 PowerTools 2006
RegSupreme Pro 1.4
RegSupreme 1.4
jv16 PowerTools 1.4 or
ByteGuardian 1.0

It seems that I can download any of them to try out and then buy if I like it. What do you suggest? Will this do everything that you suggested I do in your earlier post from yesterday?

Thanks,
Bruce

it is an excellent tool and wll probably place it on my thumb drive for use.

But.....I see that one can really get themselves into trouble with it. So use cautiously or make sure you have his phone number, LOL.

He can probably get you through it, buit most definately via another post. The registry is like a garbage can and does need to get cleaned out, but soetimes we accidently throw out things we should not have.

My suggestion is: yes I think you need to use something like this, but I think that you (a novie) may be better served using the microsoft regclean.

I know that it does not do as much, but may be safer in the long run.

What do you think IAN?

I once used a program called Registry Mechanic (I think that was the name), I may still have it. What do you think of that vs. this or microsoft regclean?

Do you mean registry mechanic? Ok I appreciate it. What should I do in the meantime?

Also I ran the Norton scan last night, it seems to have started at the other end of my partitions and worked towards the C: drive. It took quite awhile and I had to go to bed. My son and daughter in law were looking at some pictures from a cd that she received from her family in Poland. I told them to leave the machine running but they seem to have shut it down in error. I guess I'll have to run it again tonight. It showed only one item found although I don't know what it was. I guess that it doesn't remove items for you, does it?

Thanks,
Bruce

JV16powertools was originally recommended to me about 3 years ago and I've been using it without problems ever since.

If you use the registry cleaner, you'll see each line needs to be checked to be worked on and each line tells you the reason why it has been highlighted so you can decide. Then you can select the option for the program to try to fix the item, and it will give you the option to back the item up before it does anything so everything can be undone if you have a problem. I've never had to use the undo function though.

With the start up items function, if you only disable something it's easy to re-enable if something doesn't work. Nothing will crash doing that.

I suggest you do a search for what other people are saying and I think you'll find the reports are very positive.
