Smooth water with A620*

Great shots. I love number 3. The colors of the leaves, water, etc., wish I were there!

Thanks for sharing!

Hello Steve

Beautiful shots. They're all nice but I prefer the first one. I like the way the image is framed by a branch up above and in the extreme foreground there are a few bright colored leaves that catches your eyes first and then leads you in to the center of the picture. Very nice.

I'm kind of clueless about filters; Is an ND filter a neutral density filter? and does it reduce the amount of light getting through so that you can have longer exposures? is "8x mean it lets through 1/8th the light?

Cathy

You've got it right, it is a neutral density filter, I like to think of it as sunglasses for your camera. They are really essential for the long exposures of water to give you the smooth flowing look. See this link for more info on them:

The A620 is great, thank you for your kind comments. If you like to
take water shots I do recommend you purchase an adaptor so you can
use the ND and or polarizing filters.

Did you use a polarizing filter in addition to the ND filter on these photos, or are you just saying that both are useful? I, too, have an A620, and an adapter and a polarizer, so it would be fairly easy to add an ND filter.

I did use both in these images, ND to enable the long exposures and the polarizer to ensure that the water would be more see-thru than reflective. I would say that both are very useful alone or together. I would recommend purchase of a ND filter not only for water shots like these, but for any shots where the light is very "hot", also good to decrease depth of field.
