Whenever I try to set custom white balance in the way stated in the user manual - i.e. putting a white blank sheet of paper in front of fully zoomed lens - every picture shows a very ugly green cast (on screen - I did not dare printing any of the greenies).

Did someone share the same experience and is willing to give some advice ?

To switch off any doubts on my camera (firmware 1.00D), I would like to add that every other WB preset works fine; shooting with Auto WB gives the best all round results, followed by Flash WB when using flash (a bit warmer than Auto).

Actually, I experienced some "coldness" in outdoor, daylight / cloudy shoots, mostly corrected with PS Elements "auto levels" or "auto contrast". This somewhat annoyes me, because I would expect good "out-of-the-box" colour range from such a good camera (this is my 4th digicam and I own 2: G2 is the best I used).

Thanks everywhere.--Mauro

I've found the "curves" tool in PS 6 to be the best for setting level, contrast and white balance quickly and accurately. I just use auto white balance on the camera (G1) and do a quick (30 sec max) tweak in PS.

Make sure the white paper does not cause an overexposed (white-out)situation, so the best way is to set the camera to P mode, as described in the manual.

Actually I've never used the sutom WB option since I shoot mainly RAW. So here are three options: Shoot RAW and set WB during RAW conversion to TIF or JPEG. for fine tuning, the picker (eyedropper) works best. Pick on any non-colored pixel (white, gray or black) until you get the colors that are pleasing. The prinicple advantage of this approach is that WB is custom set using the 10 bit RAW data as opposed to 8 bit in PS, thus it provides the highest quality output. A second option if you have PS Elements is the command: Color, color cast. The identical picker mehtod to RAW conversion described above is avaialble. A third option is to use the Curves or Levels command in PS. I think the middle slider (called gamma) on the Levels histograms of the individual R, G, B channels is the easiest approach to adjust mid tone color casts. heres a description of the histograms in Levels:
