OK crazy idea but what if those of us who are professional photographers could come up with a universal name that we could call ourselves that would eventually catch on and help to separate the pros from the soccer moms and other point and shooters with a dslr. Is this crazy or am I just tired and should go to bed now?

Any ideas? (this should get interesting)

hmmmm mine is PhotoPro

So now when someone says "what do you do for a living?" you say "i'm a PhotoPro", instead of photograher? Hey u never no. Ok time for bed now:)

PhotoPro is the name of a US photography magazine. Thanks for answering a question no one has asked.

And what exactly is going to keep the "undeserving" soccer moms and uncle Bob types from adapting the same name too? I hope you got a lot of rest...

I think the word photographer suggests that you do it professionally, doesn't it? ;)

If asking the soccer moms what they do for a living, very few of them answers that they are photographers.

While taking pictures they are of course photographers, which is totally ok with me, I have no need to be separated from them.

form a professional organization, charge high dues, be very selective on who you let join, then after your name you can put

You can register a name in a certain workfield, and then you can sue anybody using that name....

In the EU "photopro" is already registered:

http://register.boip.int/bmbonline/details/trademark/show.do?markID=1363385&markNumberType=EUR&markNumber=2227924
But as you can see, this name is registered for :

"Printing inks for InkJet methods" and "Specially formulated paper consumables for photo-realistic pictures and prints".

This leaves someone the opportunity to register tha name for other activities that do not conflict, harm or overlap the ones allready registered. I think registering as a pro photgrapher under this name in europe is possible. However, if someone has already gotten photopro.something as a domain, you cannot use that domain...
