There seem to be two versions of the Kenko 1.4x TC on the market - with a black and gray housing. B&H and most available for sale seem to be black. I read here that the black version will not support AF-S functions, while the grey supposedly will. However, some posters on FM and the Cafe claim that the black version will also support AF-S.

Can someone point me to a definitive source on the subject? I am looking to buy one, and want to make sure I get something that will support AF-S lenses.

--I just bought a black one off Ebay and it's fantastic. I use it on my D80 and 70-200VR and it auto focuses. You want the black one Kenko Pro 300DG like I said I got mine off Ebay and no problems and it says made in Japan

The Kenko "300-DG" 1.4x TC is a newer version of TC designed and optimised for digital sensor and some more lenses.
It supports both motor screw drived AF lenses and AF-S lenses.

The black one is supposed to be optimized for digital. The silver/gray one is not. Supposedly the DG one is better for digital. I've read some reviews stating that you can tell (YMMV).

I have the black "Kenko 300-DG" as well...not only does it auto focus with either AF or AF-S lenses, it also supports VR and you can mount lenses that cannot be supported on Nikon TCs...

I'm quite curious too, also to add, how big is the difference
between the $80 1.5x kenko tc and the $200 1.4 kenko tc?

I have the $80 1.5x TC. It works fine with screw drived AF lenses and AF-S lenses. I asked Kenko, B&H, and Adorama what makes the $200 model better, but never got a good answer. An earlier post suggested that the $200 model adjusts aperature values reported to the camera. My $80 model does not adjust aperature values.

I have the 1.5x SHQ and 2x MC7. Both work well with screw-drive lenses but seem to hunt/oscilate tightly around focus on my 70-200mm VR. I'm not sure if I should try the 1.4x and 2x Pro 300-DG or just go w/ a single TC-17e. Reading that the Pro 300-DG makes me think I'll go that route, giving more reach and flexibility (focal lengths, max aperatures, and compatible lenses).
