Misty Morning

Nice light. those stumps on the right look like an audience seated for some kind of ritual about to take place in the foreground.

I'm intrigued as to why you chose B&W rather than colour. That's not a criticism at all. Simply a question for my education.

Hi, Claypaws. Thanks for your comments -- and your question.

This was shot in color, so I can post a color version for you. In fact, for some reason I'm not feeling quite chipper tonight, and I think a little processing might be good therapy! I'll post it for you soon.

My reason for converting was inability to deceide whether a color balance adjustment was in order or not. I'll post it with no adjustment in color balance. Please let me know what you think!

Here you go, sir! How do you like it compared to the B/W? How does it look on its own? Thanks!

Fantastic shot! I am begining to see what people are speaking of regarding the Fuji sensor and color. I have been a amature Photographer for a while but am just getting into the meat of things now (and finally some $). Have been trying to decide between the D200 and the new S5. This picture is really making me sway toward the S5. VERY nice- sets a great tone. It's difficult for me to decide if color or BW is "better." What lense were you using?

Very happy you liked the shot, and thank you very much for the nice comments.

When considering the quality of the shot, bear in mind that this shot was only the second SHOT I've attempted of this sort (fog and sunlight) and that I own no expensive glass. This was shot with the quite inexpensive Sigma 70-300 f4-5-6 APO DG Macro at 70mm.

Please feel free to ask any questions you like, and I'll try to give you a straight answer.

I like them both. I'm not normally a black and white fan but I do like this one in B&W. I Like the way the light comes in over the bridge. Great shot.

Sure- I have some questions-

In looking at many pics with the s3 I am seeing amazing color as well as extremely nice texture-almost 3d look to the pics- very nice. When looking at canon pics they seem flatter (less 3d look) and color tends to have more gray in them-less brillant. Nikon D200 pics seem to appear neutral in color with very good sharpness, more 3d than canon but less than fuji. I do understand lenses make a difference but here we have a picture which I find very nice with a so so lense. So, on to my questions

In this latest mega pixle debate/issue- have you found the 6mp of the S3 limiting in any way since owning the camera? I have an older canon rebel and I can say that I have found the 6mp limiting to me and clearly can see the limitations when I print 8x10 or crop and resize.

Second question- can the colors of the fuji sensor be duplicated in PP or other processing software-- ie to buy a D200 with more MP and then correct the color?

Thanks

Nice shot Robert.

That Sigma lens seems to work miracles, of course in the right hands!

The color balance appears to look fine to me. How did you set the WB? Also, the B&W looks very nice. How did you convert to B&W?

Mike

I can help you with your question regarding MP and limitations.

I recently bought an HP 8750 (which prints to 13x19) and have printed several very different shots to 11 x 14 size, some of them cropped considerably -- and they look great. I have yet to print at 13x19 size merely b/c I have no use so far for that size print. I have little doubt it will print out quite nicely at that size -- and I'm sure others will pipe in who have experience at that size.

One of the things I love about the S3 is the flexibility of its images in terms of processing and cropping.

As for matching the D200 IQ to the S3 in terms of color, I understand it can be done reasonably well -- but with a good deal of tinkering. I think Anthony has a method for doing it, so you might like to do a search. (Personally, I would not buy a D200 if I wanted the Fuji look -- especially if you can get a D200 with Fuji inside!

The WB was set on shade -- accidentally as I recall from the late afternoon before!).

And I'm embarrassed to admit that the B/W conversion was done with a click on the greyscale button in my processing software!

Fabulous shot Robert, I like the color one to but the B&W is smashing. Warm up that printer and try a 13x19 you'll love it.

Best regards, Ed

You just hit the nail on the head with you're analesys of the different color qualitys off various cameras, I see it the same way and therefore find it hard (or imposible) to give up on fuji I print basicly in 2 sizes either 8x10 or 13x19 and even a 70% crop prints absolutely beautiful. I use an Epson 2400 but there are many good printers out there and the S3 gives plenty of information for this size, I have given up to argue about how many MP the S3 is since I have managed to get great prints from 50% crops at 11x14 and that's plenty for me. I'm also convinced that more is possible with the right printing software / interpolation. I do'nt have a good answer for your second Q but from what I heard and read and tried with my D50 backup, not impossible but difficult and time consuming. Get yourself an S5 .

Comments/Criticisms welcomed!
Lovely shot Robert.
I prefer the B&W version to the colour one, although both are good.

A fine oasis in the hot stormy desert of S5 confusion, speculation, misunderstanding and misinformation.

seems a bit faded to me. the b&w seems to lack some contrast and the color one seems to light.

See them walking hand in hand across the bridge at midnight
Heads turning as the lights flashing out it's so bright
Then walk right out to the fourline track
There's a camera rolling on her back, on her back
And I sense the rhythm humming in a frenzy all the way down her spine
