Ok I think I have decided that I will get either of these cameras. I really would like to read a review on the 3020 but none have been posted as of yet. Also I have read many reviews on the 3000 which is essentially the same camera as the 3020 so at least I know its a quality camera. I might also look at getting the 700.

Now I need to know which of these two cameras I should get. I have read the many threads regarding this same topic, but am still unsure.

These are some advantages/disadvantages I have noticed.

The 2040 has a faster and brighter lens than the 3020.

The 3020 comes with Photoshop Elements :D

The 3020 is newer technology.

The 3020 has noise reduction for long exposures.

The 3020 has 3 megapixels versus the 2 megapixels on the 2040.

THe 2040 has audio in movies, allows for an external flash, and has a longer zoom range.

The 3020 has an all new menu system (many people complained that the 2040 had a complicated menu system).

These two cameras are within a few dollars of each other so price wont affect the decision too much.

I was also looking at the 700 but dont know if I should consider that as well. Its about 50 dollars more than the other two cameras, but in some places even less of a price difference.

Some things I am worried about with the 700 are Chromatic Aberrations.

Are they really that bad?

Also how are the chromatic aberrations on the 2040 and the 3020?

Thanks :D

Hello again!

The 2040 does not have sound in the movie mode. I think it has pretty much the same menu system as the 3000, 3030 and 3040. Oly revised their menu system with the 700, I believe. I don't find the 2040's menu system confusing, and I'm not sure that the new "simpler" menu system is any great advantage. The 3020 doesn't have the ability to connect to a TV for displaying your pictures-the 2040 does. As much as I love my 2040, I'd recommend that you go with the 3-megapixel Oly. However, I'd buy the 3000 before I'd buy the 3020 if the price is really close. It has sound, video out port, serial port in addition to USB, ability to attach an external flash - all of which are missing from the 3020. The 3020's bundling with Photoshop Elements, however, is an enticement!

Good luck!

Dc,
a couple of points:

1) bumping sucks (particularly after only 2 hours).

2) I can't really help with the comparison, as I only have a 2040 (and have not touched the others), but I'll note that the 2040 does not do audio with the movie feature.

3) the "extended" zoom range of the 2040 (120 mm equivalent) is at the expense of the wide angle (40 mm equivalent). I believe that when compared to a 3020, the 2040 max-zoom image will be exactly equivalent to the central 2 Mpix of the 3020 max-zoom image (i.e., the 2040 has roughly the same lens magnification range, but just a smaller imager surface area.) (but I'm sure this tells you anything important).

4) no CA problems with the 2040, in my experience.

5) if all 3 camera's are roughly equal in price, it probably depends more on what you intend to use the camera for.

good luck with your choice.

PS, don't forget the price of 2 sets of NiMH batteries and a charger (total 30 if you shop hard), and a higher capacity SM card ($30 for 64 Megs?). (save the lithium disposibles that come with the camera as your emergency supply: they are reported to have a very long shelf life).

Hello,

For me chromatic aberation have not been a problem with my C700 and i love the big zoom, there is no way i am returning to a small zoom camera. Depending on your need, if you think you can live without a big zoom, all other cameras are very good as well. Don,t think you will not have chromatic aberation problem with the C3020 or c2040...they also have their problem with this.

All those cameras are good but I'm spoiled by the big zoom of my 2100 which is the same focal length the C700 has. So, from that bunch, I'd pick the C700 because of that and the Electronic View Finder (EVF) which gives you more of an "SLR" feel by showing you a more accurate view of your subject and making the expsoure info available while shooting. As for the CA, you'll see a little more of it with the C700 but they all have CA to a certain extent and it can be removed during editing. Good Luck.

Buy an UZI. ;-)

Seriously, I think the biggest question you have to answer is
would you be better off with the higher MP of the 3xxx series
or the 10x zoom of the 700. If you like zoom, and plan on taking
a lot of zoom shots, the 10x of the 700 will often compensate for
its lower pixel count. On the other hand, another way to look
at it is that you can buy a 3xxx and later add a teleconverter
if you feel the need for more zoom. There's no equivalent way
to add more MP to the 700 later on. Personally, having the 10x
always there w/no attach/unattach/storage hassle is attractive to me.

I've played around with the movie feature on my MODEL NAME CENSORED* . It's "cute", but not very practical. It eats up memory card
space fast, and the resulting files are hard to share due to their size
unless you and everyone you want to share with have a high speed
link. But then that's me... how important is "movie taking" to you?

Finally, I believe they need to keep Schottenheimer, but ditch Jimmy Ray,
and find a way to trade for Drew Bledsoe. Your thoughts on that?

because of this:

I happen to read reviews for most digital cameras when i wanted to buy mine.

they all have more or less problem with chromatic aberation, unless you want to pay $$$$ and buy a digital SLR.
Hello,

... Don,t think
you will not have chromatic aberation problem with the C3020 or
c2040...they also have their problem with this.
... and you know this because ... ?

Yes especially if you don't intend to print at higher size than 10 x 8, then 2.1mp will do fine.

I had just a big hudge zoom lens 200mm with my film SLR and i wish i had better zoom all the time. So there was no hezitation to buy the c700 when i had the choice. The main question is if you're going to take photo inside most of the time, then you better get the fastest lens of the 2040. The C700 is for active outdoor people, that love to go hiking and being in nature. It can be use inside but the c2040 makes a better job at this.

The features that the 3000 has over the 3020 dont really interest me too much. Not because they arent good, but because I would never take advantage of them or even use them.

I do like the advantages of the 3020 over the 3000 though.

Thanks for your help :D

I actually really want a bigger zoom lens. The C-700 seems to suit my needs very well, but I really dont like the chromatic aberrations. I dont know if its me or not, but the chromatic aberrations seem worse on the C-700. Is there a way to easily remove them through Photoshop or another editing program?

My suggestion would be to step up to the 3040 because of its faster
lens, flash input, etc. The 3020 does not have a flash input. You
can pick up Elements with rebates for $50-70.

I really wouldnt use the flash input and for that price I would rather buy an Uzi or a Dimage 5. All three of those cameras are out of my price range.

What do you have to do to get rid of it?

:) I love the way you just threw that in there :D

I think they should keep Schottenheimer as well. I dont think Steve Sperrier will fair well in the NFL. I think we need a GM, so Snyder will stop making stupid decisions based on his complete lack of knowledge on anything football. He really knows nothing about the sport.

I would love for Bledsoe to come here, we need a QB. And I hope they give Westbrook a new contract in the offseason. Hes a good asset to the team :D

And once again theres always next year :)

I have a 3040 and I'm extremely pleased with it
I suggest you consider a 3.3 mp. You wont regret it when you print 8X10s
The new 1.8 lens is far better than old one found on the 3020.
My suggestion would be a 3040
