New Firmware - Amazing

I was about to ask the same thing.

Plus, has anybody done the test with a faster lens?
Focus results (setting at lock) in my tests were identical and correct (see post several lines up).

Test was run with Canon 28 2.8

I am very surprised that there was a difference in speed.

I agree, my D30 with all the lenses act like a new camera.
It really is! My D30 with a 28-135IS and a 550EX can now get a
focus lock in an almost completely dark room at night with no
lights on. It definately could not do this before I did this
update. The picture is off center because I could not even see
what I was shooting. There is no post processing and the flash was
facing straight up with the wide panel extended.

I have only shot a couple of shots but, to be honest, I am very
excited about the improvement and I wanted to share it.

I dont think there is anything fishy about it and it will eventually be on Canons site. Chuck Westfall of Canon told us about it in Rob Gailbraiths forum and said he would email to anyone wanting it. So many did that Fred put it up on his site for people to download. The fix is supposed to be mainly for the remote. It does appear companies dont mention all the fixes made for some reason but the latest update I put on my Pro90 also speeded up focus and some other unreported things. I will see if they put this on my D30 as it is in to Canon service.-- http://www.pbase.com/galleries/sasc

Went from 1.02 to 1.02.2

One question I've not seen asked or answered yet is, for those
times when focus lock could not be obtained and now can be
obtained, is the resulting image in focus?
Now this doesn't turn the 28-135 IS into an L lens, but it did come out in focus. Here is that same pic that was taken in a dark room. I could not see this, thats how dark the room was. All I did was sharpen and crop.

I beleive that was my theory... posted on the d30 form at Rob Galbraith's site... looks like I might have been right, as it seems to be not unlike a software based 'multiplier locking'

for example:

if firmware rev#

which would be hard coded into the camera's OS. I wonder if they might have a similar 'issue' affecting the buffer... hmmmm...
I read
somewhere that by design the focus chip was "neutered" in the final
release of the camera. Perhaps they are finally letting go and
resetting the chips firmware somehow to put it more in line with
other SLR's in the line. We shall see.......

Also went to 1.02.2 from 1.02, mounted a 28-135mm and did an unscientific before and after test. Nothing changed as far as I can tell, still focusing as slow as ever.

If you're using the red AF-assist of the 550 or STE2, all bets are off.

Reports of AF-assist being helpful with AF in total darkness pre-date this forum.

"...I have a 550EX, or the ST-E2 transmitter mounted on the camera, anyway, which gives a far superior aid to focusing in total darkness."

There was another good post written by Furrukh ages ago where he demonstrated the near-total darkness AF ability of the D30/ST-E2 combo, but I'll be darned if I can't find it!

I just did before and after tests with and without the AF assist light, with 3 different lenses on the D30, with old fir and new fir. None of the three lenses could focus in total darkness before, or after the upgrade, even after using the AF assist light. In short no change!

I tried focussing with my 10 year old Elan I, with the red assist lamp, and bingo! All three lenses could lock on. When Canon releases a fir that will do that, I'll believe that there has been an improvement. Until then live with it.

Lenses used were :
70-200 F4.0 L
70-300 APO SM
35-80 III

I wouldn't expect the lens to now be able to focus in or near total darkness,
I could see were it might focus a tad faster if the code was furhter
optimized though.

Tested with 28-135IS as follows:

Before upgrade:

Found 2 targets in room that camera will not focus on. One was a white wall about 5 feet away, 2nd was window blinds about 4 feet away.

After upgrade:

Still will not achieve focus on either subject.

Interesting thread. Inconsistent results. I decided to give it a try. Lowered the lights, determined the AF threshold on severals areas of a door and wall using a slow 3.5-4.5 lens. Noted where I could not get lock. Downloaded and installed the firmware upgrade off of Fred's site. Whoa! There is an improvement! Is locking on some (but not all) of the areas where is wouldn't lock before. Seems a tad faster. Also, my D30 seems to boot a little faster when powering up... I'm happier.

Me to Tony...same thing...the slowness of the LCD panel was bothering me a little...it isn't anymore.

TOL--Life's short...go for it

No change for me either, but it does seem to boot up a tad faster.

Went from 1.0.2 to 1.0.2.2, tested with 28-135 IS/USM
