After half a dozen different pics, I figured it out.

Oly understands several things:

First, E-1 looked great, one of the most attractive cameras on the market.

Second, E-1 did not sell as well as expected, and ended up at fire sale prices.

Third, E-300 was ugly as sin. Some folks around here christened it the "ghetto cam".

Fourth, E-300 sold well, and really put Oly on the map for SLR sales.

Now, the obvious conclusion is that "ugly sells". So, the new camera is an attempt to push this to the limit.

LOL, What did they do to that excellent E-1 design? this mock up looks a little like the Pentax MZ-S film SLR.

maker in the first place.' -Mr. Maitani, creator of the OM photographic system.

HI Joe

Now that was pretty funny - I think that mock up looks seriously ugly esp compared to the E1.

I figured the e-300 sold good becuase it was super cheap compared to anything else I saw when I bought it. I knew next to nothing at the time i bought it.

My dad has been up in an airplane once in his entire life. ;)

Around here, Wisniewski is a very common name. There are thousands of us in the Detroit area. Back when I worked at Ford, there was another Joseph Stanley Wisniewski working in the same building as me. Caused no end of trouble for the mail room.

My E-300 (Ghetto Cam) has a beauty of it's own...

:-)

Now the mockup is "butt" ugly if you ask me, but I think it was done on purpose, so the competition wouldn't worry about it...

I think the E-3 would be the same size as the E-400, with more MP and better AF system...it's just a hunch for the kind of products Olympus makes, they know those gargantuan cams made by the other companies, have been poorly designed, it's just a matter of big time publicity to convince buyers of those "tanks" that they are pretty...tell them enough times they buy it... they don't impress me with their design...but that's just me.

First, it's 'there's no E3, there's no future', despite the fact that several dslr makers have survived with no pro model at all.

Then, it's 'delayed, everything must be wrong, Oly has abandoned the pro market'.

Now, I hear - 'it's ugly'. (actually, it is - has the Canon blob on steroids look)

Geez, do you people use these cameras, or just whine about them? I rather liked that big honking LCD on the back of the mockup.

Imagine that a manufacturer set out to build a whine proof camera, and you'd get - the A100. All the right buzzwords, all the good specs, but the end result doesn't quite live up to the promise.

Uh oh, an official A100 whine. Sorry, Sony - back to the drawing board.

I mean the E-300, that was truly nasty ;-). I'm not sure why people don't like the E-P1. I like the clean lines and really what is more imortant to me is the grip, which looks very close to that of the E-1. Whoever staged the E-P1 for DPNow should have used the 14-54 instead. The 50mm simply just just doesn't look good with the mockup. It doesn't even look good w/ the E-1 (IMHO). They probably wanted the 50mm because its small and won't dominate the image, but c'mon, it really just doesn't setoff the camera.

Actually, upon further thought, the only thing that makes it ugly are those sharp straightish lines of the top, on the both sides of the viewfinder. When seen from side, where you cannot see the lines, the mockup looks very nice.

Yes, the sharp edges leading from the viewfinder and the tilted faces on each side of it are mostly responsible for the ugly look...

Agreed. In fact, from the grip side it looks a lot like the E-1. What's with the shoulders? The Canon T-90 started this 'shouldered' look, the EOS-1 took to a whole new level and then Leica mocked it with their hunched R series - now Olympus decides that what a camera REALLY needs is epaulettes!
