What can we conclude from the E1 successor image ?

I thougt Oly marketing was slouch, but now I'm seeing the brilliance! They make a mockup so honkin large and ugly, that nearly anything would be an improvment. Way to decrease the expectations before releasing a really slick little E-3 that is strikinly like the E-1 with live view and AS.

(I would keep my fingers crossed if I didn't just knaw them off).

Cheers, Seth

It is amaizing to me to read such negative responses from the readers of this forum. For two years now I've been reading the hopeful musings from you all wishing for a cutting edge design that is as ground breaking as the E-1 was. We looked to MilSuper and others for hope, we stood our ground against trolls who proclaimed our beloved four thirds equipment dead, etc.

Now we finally see what Oly is up to and listen to the complaining! Do we really think so little of Olympus that we judge from preliminary photos at first glance and proclaim defeat, ourselves?

Look harder! Have you noticed that there aren't ANY dials on that body?

That could mean that the usual dial functions are all handled by menu through the lcd, it could be that it is a touch screen, or what about voice recognition? I chose to get excited by the mystery and possibilities. That is one gorgeous camera. No doubt now as to whether Oly is serious about the pro segment.

I see it as very unique and eye catching, like the F-22 Raptor!

It's INCREDIBLE....

Maybe it is water tight as is.. up to 3 meters?!

Maybe the kit lens is 7-14mm, perfect for underwater photography right?!

If this E3 will be as solid as the E-1 in regards to build quality, I could seriously hurt Canon/Nikon die hards if they laugh at its looks --- ugly.

Wow

That is a nice design.

After 3 Years Olympus finally announce a new pro camera and people want it to look like the old one. If Olympus did that there would be complaints about their lack of innovation. If they made it to small there would be statements like “ To small to be considered serious camera”. As to ugly I personally think the Pentax K10D is butt ugly (it looks like a nun in a habit with a sharp nose) but that is my opinion.

Hell do you want us to still be driving 70’S Mini’s with V8 engines in them or the would you have the BMW designed one.

The rear LCD has a slight gap around it like that of the E-330 rather tan a sold seal like on al other E system bodies, so it appears to be articulated. The only reason for that is for LiveView.

Clearly it does not have a porro-prism VF of the E-330, but the VF hump is bigger than on the E-1, so there might be a second CCD for LiveView in there. But there are other options: the extra space could be a for a high end EVF instead of an OFV, or just for a higher magnification optical VF.

Personally, I would like a very good EVF, which could solve the VF image size/brightness issue for once and for all, allow zooming for precise manual focus, give perfect 100% coverage, and so on. But only if EVF technology has advanced enough to give good resolution and negligible lag.

they can't listen to their clients for once and give us upgraded E1 body? Everyone would be happy.
I would not be, and prefer the new design.
  • the E-1 focus mode switch needs to be moved from the bottom left corner, where I rest the camera on my palm and sometimes change mode accidentally.
  • the E-1 battery grip gets in the way of where I want my left hand (see previous item): the new cut-away battery grip looks better for that.
  • the control buttons in front of the top LCD are hard to use: I prefer all setting buttons be visible from behind and thumb operable.
So the new design seems to address my three main exterior ergonomic complaints with the E-1.

Honestly, overall, I think it looks pretty good. But so far, it's just a mock-up with no real detail like dials, etc. But, why the scoop on the bottom of the camera where the battery would go? Is it so that it will take the current large battery for the E-1 grip? Why not just bring it out to the edge so it could take a bigger battery with higher capacity?

Just curious. Other than that, there's really nothing to talk about until we know something a little more real than an artist's rendition.

Judging only by its looks (since we don’t have any specs yet) I think it is safe to say that it was handcrafted in the city of Gotham by Batman. It does have that gothic look doesn’t it?

There's not 2 but 3 sides to every story. Theirs, yours, and what really happened.

You're starting to look elsewhere for a cam because this concept of the next e pro cam looks ugly? The cosmetics of the cam is above and beyond lens choice, photo quality and ergonomics?

geesh no wonder the e300 didn't do too well. . . .

very good points i'd also like to add that they may not want to publish specs for the sake of the competition taking what could possibly be some unique features

Wow is a nice camera...!!

I like it...
What technical features can we deduce ?

I think we can deduce, it has no Live View A mode like the E-330.

Can we say something about the CCD/CMOS/NMOS design ?
Are there more hints, for example in the texts ?

Oly's intention was to communicate nothing about features or
specifications, but simply that the new camera is somewhat larger
than the E-1.

But because the body shell appears larger, it will most
likely contain "more" inside than the E-1 - and by "more" I mean
more of the technology that is necessary to gain market share
against the flagship cameras from Canon and Nikon.
This mockup has about the same height and width as the E-1, and with the cutaway grip, reduced mass.

True, there are dials for navigation through VF, LCD and display settings.

What I ment is that the PASM dial is missing, as are any other preset dials. Everything seems to be handled by those two selector dials and the 4 point nav buttons. The "OK" button is not in the center of the 4 point grouping (ala E500 & 330), but separate (ala E-1). I agree that the battery cut-away should be an improvement over the E-1/grip for lens handling.

Concerning the comment about the buttons below the rear display, not on the left of it, consider that the overall width can be less this way, whereas the space at the bottom is readily available, less critical to dimensions.

What do you all think from the pictures, is the grip removable? There seems to be a large parting line indicating that it is separate, but if so, it flows with the form of the body much better than the E-1's grip.

i have read everything - thanks - i will not write or answer sth because i shot a wedding today with my e-330 and i am so tired, i have to do sth for relaxation or so now. have a good day
