am thinking of upgrading from 350d to 400d but am worred about 400d uderexposing photos as i am new to photography and dont normally post process photos due you think photos will be as good using 400d want to upgrade as find the rear screen menu much better on 400d and have been ofered a good price for my camera 350d any comment welcome cheers john

if you are experiencing problems with underexposure with your 400d you can simply make a small adjustment to your EC to fix it the metering on both cameras is slightly different so you will need to get used to it if you use some of the other picture styles you should be able to get great photos right out of camera overall the 400d has great features

I find myself always wanting to PP my 350D shots down in exposure and brightness/highlights.

My experience so far has been that the 400D needs less of this. I also think there are more features in the 400D with it's picture styles, etc. that are aimed at helping you get better out-of-the-camera shots.

sounds good to me cant see any reson now not too upgrade many thanks also when playing with 400d in shop was amazed how easy to read rear screen to see f stop shutter speed i always struggled with the 350d and left it in auto mode most of the time with the 400d its now time to move on and start using the camera in all other modes,,thats the plan anyway ha ha cheers john

I upgraded from 350 to 400 and I love it.

I think the underexposure issue is mainly due to different parameter settings between the two cameras (since 400D uses PicStyles with more range)

There is slightly more noise with the 400D but its still very acceptable (to me anyway)

Here is a comparison based on JPG low quality (for space)
These are straight out of the camera using in camera parameters.

Thanks for the pics, but why did you do such a great comparison - everything perfectly compared as best as possible - and then set one camera to sharpen +7 and the other sharpen +2 ? The 400D shot is so much more sharpened in-camera.

I appreciate the effort, but that kinda spoiled the comparison a bit.

Cheers.

Well, this shows the maximum sharpening possible IN CAMERA.

The 350 only allows +2 while the 400 can go up to +7 (which I think is a bit too high)

I wouldn't personally since the changes aren't that significant, but Canon will love you if you do. If you want to upgrade, maybe look at the 20D right now which are going at a very nice price. Here you get a more pro body with extra speed as well as the better focusing of the 400D. Or wait until the 40D which would likely be a much bigger upgrade IMO.

Ok, I see your reasoning. But yes the maximum on the 400D seems higher than the maximnum on the 350D.

Ok, now go shoot again with both on +2. :) (Just kidding)
