Here's a quote from Oly's Americas web page re. the E-1:

"Olympus asked the pros, and based on the expertise of professionals around the world, the E-1 was built to fit your needs like no digital SLR before it. Light for impressive portability. Ergonomically shaped for remarkable comfort. Appropriately placed buttons and controls for immediate access. Weighing a mere 23.5 oz. for dramatically improved handling wherever your next assignment may take you. With compact, lighter lenses due to the new design based on a 4/3-type image sensor that's perfectly matched to the lenses themselves. It is precisely the camera we heard you've always wanted, and precisely the camera we engineered to give you the photographic edge you've been looking for."

What, so now they've discarded all of that supposedly great input/feedback and developed a huge Canonite pig? I refuse to believe it. This thing must be a development article, not representing what the final item will look like. Either that or Olympus has gone nuts.

Okay, now flame me to the ground for not raving over everything Olympus plops on the ground for us to oggle...

Maybe all the pros use Canon now? ;)

The mockup is not as huge as it looks, as well as the E-400 might feel much smaller, then the measures will make you think.

At the introduction of the E-1 the Top-Pro lenses were not available- they ask for a larger body to ballance them- I'm not sure though, that the whole thing is heavy as well- they might just have inluded a lead-plate in the base of the (detachable) vertical grip(maybe that plate could be inserted or taken off, as well)- this way you would be able to counterbalance the weight of heavier lenses, and use a light body with smaller lenses.

please look at the comparison pictures and you will notice, that the new E is almost the same size as the old E-1, just the prism hump is significantly bigger and the lens mount has moved more into the center...

Oh ye of faith! I'm looking at the pictures of that body with the 7-14 and it still looks huge. Showing it with the 50mm macro was a mistake (Come on Oly!) - makes it look truly gargantuan, but I still say it's significantly larger than the E-1 to my eye.

Geex what a lot of fanboys.

Oly

I don't know what you're looking at, but other than the prism being a few millimeters higher than the E-1 ..... it looks the same size. The grip is removable.

Get a grip :)

I use Olympus equipment. I know a handfull of other professional users, and none of them have ever been surveyed by Olympus. Who are these pros Olympus has helping them design cameras?

Like you, I sure hope it doesn't resemble the real thing too much. The image does have that CGI (computer-generated image) feel to it, I must say, especially the top plate. To name one VERY IMPORTANT thing, the dials are missing on the battery-grip, which worries me a bit... A pro-body without full controls on the battery grip would be idiotic. On the plus side, it looks like new rubber is used, although it could just be the same rubber with a different surface finish. The rubber is the only thing that is below-par on my E1. The size doesn't worry me. I'll be off to Cologne next wednesday, hope to catch a glimpse of it...

I agree:

Will the real E3 please stand up?
please stand up..
please stand up!

Will the real slim shady please stand up
please stand up..
please stand up!

Where has the advantage of small size gone? Remember smaller, lighter and better?

Well... "Who are the pros that are helping"...

Hopefully NOT the same ones that use Canons all the time, or the ones that help out in General Motors focus groups.

Why in THE HE__ would people find it necessary to ask arrogant bloody moro_s who measure their manhoods by the size of their "Canons" anything?

I hope Oly isn't asking focus group people anything.

Where do you think that lousy theme song for Star Trek, "Enterprise", came from?

...is you complain to much about the size and don't bother to read other posts here about the mock up size. look these pictures:

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

I agree that it isn't much bigger but I don't like that design. I hope they're planning some refinements.

Look at the back of an E1; now look at the back of the E-P1. The latter lacks that sweep on the right hand side where the bottom is narrower than the top. That sweep is part of what makes the E1 so comfortable.

And those Canon-like humpy shoulders? Yuck.

The new Fuji S5Pro is a fine-looking camera. I'm sure Oly's final product will look much better than this mock-up.
