Need your help.

I'm shopping about for a lens to go with my 30D which I am also about to buy and I came across this site which I have used for PC gear successfully in the past.

Being fairly new to the world of dSLR I was wondering if they have the correct lens pictured here for this lens description:

I thought the magical red-ring was reserved for "L" series glass only ?

By my reckoning I think they are talking about this lens:

Am I right ? Thanks for your expert opinions.

fwiw: tossing up between this 17-85mm or the 17-55mm at twice the price, which sorta puts it out of my range really, but is really it THAT much better ?

PS: Don't take too much notice of the prices, that's just our funny little Aussie dollar doing it's thing ;-)

Hi Lochness,

As far as I can see, on the first link you provided, they're showing the 24-105 f4 L lens.

It's the wrong photo for the title and description (17-85IS).

Sorry, can't help you on your other question.

Rgds

Gavin.

It is (in Canon land). The picture show an L-lens (24-105L IS I'd guess), not the 17-85 IS.

Well, it IS better, it's up to you if it is worth twice the price to you. It might, if you really need f/2.8 for example.

See the review section on photozone.de, there're reviews of both lenses.

The text 24-105 is clearly visible around the foremost portion of the lens housing.

although this isn't perfection.

I am pretty sure, if you have the money, the 17-55 2.8 IS is a class above the rest. Sharper and the combo of IS and 2.8 makes it also a wonderful indoot-low light lens. You won't ever need anything in that range again. It covers alot of needs, whereas the other lenses are older generation.

I poked around that web site for a couple of minutes. They use the same image for all Canon lenses.
