Pentax is back! :-)

Hello,

I know that you are all very excited, and I am too!

With the announcement of the K10D and now the DA* lenses Pentax
have fulfilled all those wishes that I had in 2002 when I switched
to Canon. Needless to say, if I were in that situation now, I
would have stayed with Pentax. In fact, for the time being I
consider Pentax's new system to be the most attractive of all (yes,
better than Canon, Nikon, Sony and so on). To seasoned
professionals who need a camera like the Canon 1D or 1Ds, even the
K10D will not be good enough, but for all others this ought to
suffice for several years.

Regarding the K10D, I am not amazed that Pentax has built such a
camera or so many unique features, but I am amazed that at the low
price.
The low price is due to marketing forces beyond Pentax's control. Sony introduced the Alpha 100 at what seemed to be an amazingly low price (compared to the asking price of the Nikon D200 and Canon 30D), forcing Nikon and Pentax to lower prices for 10mp cameras. The low price was probably also due to Sony cutting prices on its sensor. Perhaps Sony cannot charge other companies a premium for its sensors while giving its own camera division a discount on the same sesnor. Who know?
I am very happy about the USM motors in the new lenses and
it is great to see new * lenses from Pentax. I am not thrilled
that these are reduced-circle lenses, but apparently that's what
Sony, Nikon and Pentax intend to stay with.
Yes, unfortunately the camera makers are pushing these reduced circle lenses that will become useless when cameras with larger sensors are introduced.
If Canon does not release an affordable 1.3 factor camera in the
nex 1-2 years, I will be swithing back to Petnax. Until then happy
shooting,
Bojidar
Canon has said that it will discontinue the 1.3x crop sensor. That makes sense because according to Canon's white paper on full frame sensors, an 8 inch wafer can produce around 20 full frame sensors or around 40 1.3x sensors, but the same wafer can produce 200 1.6x crop sensors. That means the full frame sensor is only slightly more expensive to produce than the 1.3x crop sensor (2x), but the full frame sensor is a lot more attractive to buyers than a 1.3x crop sensor, so Canon can charge a lot more for cameras with full frame sensors. I look for Canon to lower the price of the 5D or its successor instead of bringing out a new 1.3x crop camera.

Bojidar,

I would like to thank you for the Pentax K mount page. It is a VERY valuable resource to which I constantly refer.

It is also nice to see you drop in on the DP Review forum. I hope we can hear more from you in the future.

Hi Rob,

nice camera!

To me this is like an "LX 2001 Limited" (Hint: the 31 Limited came
out in black in 2001).
Thanks Boz,

You might recall I had one of the first black ones on the PDML, imported directly from Japan. The image was shot 2002 with my old Oly E-10, I still think the black Limiteds are a great match for the LX. I'm surprised that you don't still have an LX lurking somewhere. :-)

Cheers,

I guess they should earn all our business.

I was just of the mind that if Boz wanted to come back, but the money was delaying the process. Perhaps there was something I could contribute.

Lord knows my photos and advice arent much contribution around here. :)

But if $20 would help provide for someone who has provided so much to the rest of us... I would happily pay a little back. But maybe I should "pay it forward" instead...

to get a old, 50mm FOV you would use your M40/2 or DA40/2.8AL limited instead of the FA35/2

and to get an old 200mm FOV, you would use the M150/3.5 or the K150/4 instead of wow ... lots of 135mm choices...

I guess I dont understand the thought process. If you can afford to have a lens to put in front of the sensor that will capture the scene as you want it. Then why would anyone care what the crop factor is?

2x v.s. 1.5x v.s 1x seems like full steps (stops?) but 1.5x to 1.3x seems like only a half-stop difference.
