most would have already repartitioned/reformatted and reinstalled.

All will work again but you may have to reinstall.

You will be safe as long as you keep it offline, network unplugged. You cant get much worse.

OK I understand and agree. I will run all of the tests first.

Another question. I have not yet gone in and deleted any fo the files from prefetch and any other temp files? Should I do that and they run the tests?
removed the bad files, you will reactivate the problem.

I would rather run all of the tests, then use the reg retore later,
but most likely not.

I agree,

The reason I hesitate is that my friend helped me build this PC and it was a very tricky setup due to the two 250GB binging striped. I have an MSI motherboard and it was a bit tricky setting up the bios to recognize the two drives as on large 500gb drive. Also he is a bit high strung and I don't want to bother him unless I really have to.

Oh well.

So you are saying that I wouldn't have to re-set up the other two drives? Again my C:dirve is a physically separate drive from the other two.
Bios would not change.

Your c dr has your OS or Windows and programs right? Are the others for storage only? If yes then they should not be impacted.

1st defragment

2nd delete unnecessary files and ALL temp files in:
c:\windows\temp
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\Local Settings\Temp

3rd defragment again

search for huge amount of small files (1000+ files) and try to compress them to one file or so... if it's possible

If I am repeating something that someone has already written then forgive me. You can possibly find out what svchost.exe files are running by doing the following:

If you are running Windows XP then you need to run tasklist.exe from the DOS prompt. You do this by clicking on Start ==> Run and type "tasklist svc" at the prompt, (omit the " marks) and hit enter. It may or may not provide you with the information you need but then again it might so give it a try.

OK all,

I went into safe mode, removed all files in the prefetch and temp and temp internet folders. I ran Spybot, adaware, Webroot spysweeper(they all found some spyware, etc) and my AVG virus program( found no viruses)

I rebooted and cannot reset my firewall to activate and I am still running slow and my cpu usage is over 90%, drwtsn32.exe is running about 67-73% usage of the CPU.

I tried to defrag the drives the other day but can do that again.

What esle can I do??

I just tried this and it seemed to have run really quickly and opend a dos window but closed so fast that I couldn't see it and also cannot find it,

I tride to run it as tasklist svc, then tasklist.exe and both did the same. How do I bring up that window so I can see what it may have found and which is the correct command?

Thanks
Bruce

At the RUN dialog box (from the START menu), type "cmd" (without the quotes, of course). This will open a command line environment (similar to DOS command line). From here, you can run whatever program you want or need to. You can close it when you're done either by executing the "exit" command (again, without the quotes), or by using the conventional window close button.

Hope this helps,

DrWatson is probably reporting a failure. Please look at the drwatson log file I described and tell us what it is reporting as failing.

Have you looked at the system event viewer I described earlier? What does it report?

The fact that the firewall cannot activate needs to be fixed too. Which firewall are you using?

Lets boot normal and do this, biut no network connection:

start XP

go to start/run/type in msconfig

go to the startup tab

start at the bottom and disable 2 at a time and reboot and see if there is any difference.

Do a google search for a program called hijachthis.

Run this program in normal mode and then take the results to this page and post your results for analyzing:

http://www.hijackthis.de/

Then review the results and do what it says.
