Hi all,

My EOS 300D with EF-S 18-55 lens that came as a kit have been working fine for about 3 years now. Only today I discovered that it will not auto focus anymore.

After pressing the shutter button halfway, it tries to focus but fails and the focus confirmation light in the viewfinder keeps flashing and it won't let me take any pictures in AF mode. All is normal if I use MF mode.

I've wiped the lens clean and even tried other focus points. I'm just wondering what I should do as I don't know if it's the problem of the lens or the body itself?

Many thanks in advance....

It's almost certain that the secondary mirror (Canon calls is the sub-mirror) is no longer operating. It's a frequently reported problem with the DReb/300D. The usual failure point is the hinge pin, but sometimes a spring breaks or comes loose.

Either way, in the US Canon would fix it for about $200 (a bit more after allowing for shipping). In the UK, I don't know the figures.
