New Firmware - Amazing

Here's a shot in a completely dark room of a Woodstock poster. I just aimed the camera in the general direction of the poster, heard the beep almost immediately and took this picture. If it's not a firmware improvement, then why do so many people complain about the 28-135 focus abilities?

Walt

I'm not using the ST-E2 or the infrared of the 550EX. This is
without any assistance except the focus assist light built into the
camera.

Back in July last year, I can achieve the same thing with ST-E2 +
EF28-135 IS USM too! I don't think it is the 1.0.2.2 firmware.

I still think it is kinda psychological effect.

You could be right Jay. I don't notice a difference with my Sigma 17-35. It seems to focus the same as it always has. Hmmmmm.

Walt
For those that are seeing an improvement, which version of the
firmware did you have before? Perhaps the improvment was in 1.0.2
or even 1.0.1 and had not loaded it yet?

Another possibility is that there is a specific fox for the 28-135
problem. Everyone seeing an improvement seems to be seeing it
with that lens.
It really is! My D30 with a 28-135IS and a 550EX can now get a
focus lock in an almost completely dark room at night with no
lights on. It definately could not do this before I did this
update. The picture is off center because I could not even see
what I was shooting. There is no post processing and the flash was
facing straight up with the wide panel extended.

I have only shot a couple of shots but, to be honest, I am very
excited about the improvement and I wanted to share it.

I just read what I typed. I've gotten learn to type or either stop posting right after waking up.

You might try downloading 1.0.2.0 from Canon. It has the tools to do it without using the CF. But why wouldn't you want to use your CF? It is much easier.

I tried that, but the software provided to upload directly to the camera looks for 1.0.2.0, and will not recognize the new 1.0.2.2. I don't have a CF reader either, so I'm waiting for Canon to officially release this new firmware with the accompanying software to update without a card reader.

You are testing the strong point of that lens. Go outside. Set to 28mm. In daylight try to autofocus on the landscape!!!! NO WAY! Now you see the problem....

My D3 Serial X 1B28000xx was purchased from Canoga a few weeks ago.
I just returned a 28-135 lens because ion moderate light the unit
would "Hunt" for focus. I ordered a 16-36L.

I assume that my software version is 1.0.2.0 from a previous
thread. What does the last .2 update do?

(I do not know for sure what my firmware version is since I can not
get my D-30 to sync to my Dell laptop with Win ME.)

I had the 1.0.2.0 firmware and that ".2" claims to just fix a problem with the remote capture but it did alot more then that with my D30. If you get a chance to try the 28-135 IS again you should. You might find that you like it after this update.

I dont have the CF Reader/Writer. And I dont want to buy it only for upgrading firmware.

Sorry. It hand't occurred to me they would be checking for the version in the upload program itself. I guess you'll have to wait for the official release or buy a CF reader for your PC.

I'm still showing v1.0.2 in BreezeBrowser & Exif after what appeared to be a super smooth installation & update to v1.0.2.2
Has anyone else noticed this problem?

I have never heard anyone say that the stong point of the 28-135 IS is it's ability to AF in low light. However, just to play along I just went outside and took 2 pics. I wasn't concerned with anything except the AF. The first one focused on the difference between the blue sky and the clouds. You can also see part of the sun. The second focused on the top of the trees. I had to find some contrast between the clouds and sky for it to lock in the first pic but the second locked almost instantly.

Take down your Christmas lights :-)

Sigh, my AF did NOT get any better. I ran a controlled test in a
darkened room before and after upgrading. I had 1.0.2.0 and load
1.0.2.2. There was no discernable difference in AF speed or
accuracy.

I used that lens because it was the one that I was having trouble with. It could very well be that it fixed a problem that was specific to that lens. It is a popular lens. If this is true then I'm very happy because I was a little discouraged because of all of the money I had spent. It works fine now.

I'd spend 30 bucks to get it sooner, but that's me. Who knows how long it might be before they officially release it. My $2300 D30 and my $450 lens works well now. You've got more patience then I do.

Hi Jim,

Don't know this for a fact, but maybe BreezeBrowser isn't set up to show that many places to the right of the decimal. I recall that there is a way to display the version number on the LCD of the D30, but I can't remember how. Maybe someone can help with this?

I did a "string CRWxxx.CRW ~ grep "1\." on one of my CRW files and what is in my older files is exactly what BB is showing, e.g., "1.02" I'm going to do the same thing tonight on some of the new images since I've loaded 1.0.2.2 and see what's in there.
