Well my shutter seems to have finally stopped working completely. It started getting flaky early in the year. I sent it to Sigma but they couldn't get it to fail. Of course as soon as I got it back I got it to fail almost right away.

After borrowing cameras for a trip I took and returning them I finally tried tapping on the bottom of the camera when the shutter failed. It seemed to help but over time the taps became stronger and stronger until a few weeks ago when I smacked it good and it started working again and continued for well over 1k shots. Yesterday it failed in the last row of a test svc shot and I haven't been able to get it to work again. I haven't tried a hammer yet but....

Anyway, it also has a scratched sensor and it make no sense to repair old technology when new technology is so close. The repairs would be between $4-500.00 anyway which I believe will be more than 50% of the cost of a new camera.

Does anyone think the new camera will be available immediately? I have my doubts.

Can't help with a body, Mike, but I do hope the new one will be available for you quickly. Out of curiosity, how many actuations on the shutter?

Thanks, Mike

Welcome to the broken shutter club. How many actuations. I sure hope the new camera has a higher rated shutter.

Believe it or not I know where there is a brand new SD9 in the box in a store in Fort Lauderdale.

The Sd14 will be announced on the 26th, and I would assume it will start shipping soon thereafter. No solid info, but Sigma does not seem to announce until they are ready to release.

The SD10 was formally announced Oct 27. People reported being able to buy one in Japan/Hong Kong a little over 2 weeks later. People in the US reported receiving theirs late November to mid December. 6 weeks after the announcement to having one in hand seems do-able.

.... it will be 14 weeks - that's why it's the SD14 :-)

I don't know but I'm sure it is more than 50k but less than 100k. I take a lot of panos and have done many multiple row shots and some of those with bracketing so the shots build up quickly.

Problem is that when you change to a card used in another camera the counter gets reset in the Sigma and there seems to be no way to set it back so I lost count some time ago. I'll probably reformat both my 4 gig microdrives when I get the new camera.

Best,

Mike

I'm not sure as the counter was inadvertently reset several times by moving cards from one camera to another. I'm sure it is at least 50k but probably not 100k.

I wouldn't buy another sd10 today. It is a great camera and takes great pics as long as you have good light but I just can't deal with the noise on long exposures even at iso100 in low light. That is why I hope the new camera has improved this area in particular. I can do without almost all the fancy features but that low light issue is a killer for me. It could also be that my camera is particularly bad after all it has been through.

Hi Erik,

I'm really in a quandary on the timing of the camera. I somehow just don't believe it will be ready that soon. I figure it has to be ready by PMA next year and maybe it will be ready for Christmas but I'm pessimistic about it being ready before that. If it were already in the resale channels I'm sure there would be leaks and there haven't been so unless Sigma is prepared to do huge shipments in the next couple of weeks I doubt the camera is ready yet.

OTOH they were obviously ready with their teaser even if their hand was forced by the leak. A production like that doesn't happen in the few hours between its appearance and the leak so maybe they will surprise and it will be ready....

Nah, I don't think so...

Mike

LOL. You might be right about the significance of the name, I hope it is days rather than weeks but hope even more it is not months or years!

The SD10 was exactly the same - it took 2-6 weeks to begin trickling into retail channels. (IIRC the postings, it wasn't easy to get one that early, just possible.) "Huge shipments" took longer.

BTW, did you look at the Exif in the leaked photos posted here of the body? The photos of that SD14 were taken July 27. It even looks like there is the type of plastic protective film on the LCD that you get with a new camera. That suggests that the body at least could be early production -- why put protective film on a test mule? I think it will be ready to ship on time. (But then again, I don't need one 'cause I had to start 6 weeks ago.)
