Banding in D30 images :-(

What a relief!
Thank you Peter!

Did you have this banding only on iso 800/1600?
Did Canon provide you with technical details of the problem?

With best regards,
Andrey
After having this problem I kept returning cameras, I went through
3 D30s before doing my own tests and ascertaining that it was the
lens causing the problem. Since most people (even with the same
lens) don't get this problem, I can only assume you've been
'unlucky' with a particularly bad lens.

To come to the point, changing the camera won't help your problem.
Changing the lens to a different sample of the same model may
help. Changing the model of lens or avoiding continuous shooting
mode will probably help.

If you send the camera to canon for the free fix, please let me
know the results. I was offered the fix, but as I don't usually
use the 28-80mm on which it was a big problem and I've hardly
noticed the effect on the 75-300IS, I didn't bother sending the
camera in.

If all is as you say (I,m sure your right it sounds reasonable) I probaly won't bother with the fix from canon. They will probably put in a firmware fix anyway (I hope).

This may interest you, this user sent his camera back for a replacement. Clearly his problem was some kind of serious hardware or calibration failure.

This makes me wonder if we all mean the same thing when we talk about banding.

It also casts the camera problem which started this thread in a new light.

Just RTM.
Hi!

They are taken in lowlight... shouldn't matter but it would be
interesting to see if the banding appears in say outdoors photos as
well.
The sample I posted above was taken at ISO 100 outdoors with
overcast daylight. Ive only seen it on outdoor photos.

I'm not sure it's something as simple as firmware. I suspect it's some kind of shielding, or parts upgrade.

Anyway, don't take my word for it! When I first told canon about it they didn't know what it was... I sent sample photos in and was adamant that there were several people (on this forum) with the same problem, then they did some tests themselves, and came back to me after about 3 weeks to tell me they'd identified the problem. I posted my findings in this forum, but it was way back in April 2000, so it may be difficult to find using the search or deleted already.

I spoke directly to Canon Sales here in Japan. I certainly hope the information has filtered to offices in the rest of the world. It'd help if you were to call Canon, perhaps send a sample pic, and confirm that the fix is offered in your area. It should be, but I know only about Japan.
