Hello

Does anybody know, how large the RAW files from the 400D are? How many megabite do they have?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Kind regard, Andi

During my last outing, I took 118 photos and the average size was just 8.22MB. To my surprise I am getting up 120 shots on a 1GB card.

With the 350D the average was 6.74MB over a similar shoot.

Thanks for your answers. I can't understand, why some get files of about 8 mb and others more than 10 mb? I know, there is a difference between the kind of pictures you take, but I have never heard, that the difference is so big.

RAW files are compressed. It is lossless compression, but nevertheless compression. The more details in a picture, the more difficult compression is, and the larger the file. Noisy pictures are more difficult to compress, so generally the higher the ISO the larger the file, if there is more noise in the picture.

Again, this is losless compression, so when you open the file in your RAW editing program, you get exactly what you had in the camera before compression.

The real file size uncompressed is always the same, and it is about 10 x 3 x 1.5 Mbyte.

Is there a difference between the RAW's from the 400D vs. the more expensive 30D? Is there a stronger RAW compression on the 400D? The picture size of my RAW files from the 30D are more than 8 mb.

there's embedded .jpg preview file.. which size probably varies from model to model... and does not influence the RAW lossless compression in any way… but it can be used by manufacturer’s to make RAW file appear better in their RAW preview software applications.

Take your 400D, choose contrasty scene with a lot of details and take the photo at ISO1600 (if the aperture setting / min exposure will allow!) ... the RAW file size should be around 10megs min... let us know the result.
