As the E-400 will not be marketed in the US, will there be a legitimate way to acquire one here? Will overseas distributors be allowed to ship them here, and would B&H, for example, be able to sell them as imports, as they do as an alternative to so many products regularly marketed in the US?

I am sure there will be some sold on Ebay...

I suspect B&H will have grey market 400s, they often have grey market models anyway. It just means the warranty would be through B&W.

Keep in mind It is not illegal to purchase a Camera from a dealer in another country. In fact with Olympus the warranty is international. As long as it is purchased from an official dealer.

I plan to purchase one from UK or Germany when they are released.

Olympus states that they are unable to produce enough quantities for the E-400 for worldwide distribution.

It depends on the demand in Europe. If they sell like hot cakes there, then it is unlikely that importers will bring them to USA. Some may show up on Ebay but quoted in currency of the seller's origin. The exchange rate at the moment is not favorable for USD.

Olympus USA will most likely not honor the International Warranty (non Evolt). USA warranties are treated differently. When you purchase a USA model (Evolt) it comes with a USA warranty (not international).

Since Olympus did not officially bring the model to the USA market, they are not obligated to repair it under warranty.

If so, we in the US can purchase it through reputable outlets (which I've done in the past) such as Henry's or cameracanada.com. Either of these will work fine.

So did they say it won't be sold in the US only - and is Canada included in that geographical analysis?

I just wants to correct something from the last post, there is no OlympusUSA but we do have a OlympusAmerica . Just curious why you guys like a E400 when there is E300, E330, E500, E1 I remember after I bought my E300 three months later there is a E330 which is better than mine I am not happy with a new model per year and E400 is not that great vs E330 or even a E500 anyway, the only avantage for E400 I can think of is smaller. well just my two cents

the branch Olympus America does include the US, Canada, and most of north america i think, so Canada is probably not going to have it as well.

No. It looks like all of us Norte Americanos, whatever the accent, will be SOL. :)

Hi,

I've lately been attracted to the new e400, too, and trying to decide whether to postpone or rather substitute my e500 purchase and wait for the 400. You sounded so positive in your comment that I'm curious what it is that has sold you on the e400 without really having seen much of what it can do or any reviews except the Polish one translated? I wonder how the e400 would be with a 14-54 lens? I am eager to hear more from others about this camera.

Best,

Well, Susan, I hate to admit it, but what I like about the camera is the way it looks.

Reminds me of a time many years ago now when I went to buy a shortwave radio receiver I'd been wanting. The day finally came that I had the money. During the purchase, I noticed a scratch on the thing. Finally the shop owner admitted he'd had the radio to a couple of hamfests. As I was about to balk, he said "You're not buying this to look at it, are you?". It took me a time to get my mind around that statement and the concept. But yes, I was, and I suspect a lot of people get a significant amount of pleasure out of the way their toys look.

Olympus seems to treat Canada and the US as a single sales and service region, with both E and consumer photo equipment. The problem you are likely nto run into is that their New York and California service centres will not have parts, testing equipment, repair manuals, software/firmware, etcetera to either back up your nearest licensed repair subcontractor or to do major repairs/replacementsd--which tend to be shipped on to them anyway-- themselves.

In my experience Olymp;us, though sometimes disorganized, does try hard to help its costumers (they once even cleaned and adjusted and replaced a minor part on a Pen FV for me, free of charge)...but they can only do the possible, and must also stay in business. Obviously, they will generally be unable to service and finance the service of models they do not sell.

The E400 is Europe only.

http://www.pixmania.com are showing it as available Oct 15. Pixmania pretend to be based in many countries, but actually (as I found out when I finally odered some stuff in "Portugal") they are actually French and ship from Paris (at least that's where my stuff came from). So I don't see why they can't ship to the US.

The other company that might be of use is Calumet, who are US and UK based.
