Another quick question on DA16-45

As far as focussing past infinity at 45mm, the autofocus has no
problems w/ backfocussing etc. at 45mm on my copy. My issue with
being able to turn the focus ring past infinity is that I'm used to
manual lenses that you can comfortably just turn all the way if you
are doing a landscape.
I am afraid the infinity mark is approx. only to many lenses, especially for AF lenses. Mine AF past infinity too, though that's not associated with BF.
I have a sneaking suspicion that my lens simply isn't that sharp
and that's why the autofocus sensor can't get a focus lock. I guess
I'll have to do another round of testing when the lens is returned
from Pentax Malaysia. At f/8 and 16mm, the DOF should be so huge
that putting the focus ring anywhere remotely near infinity should
give acceptable sharpness. Man, I really have no desire to print
out resolution charts and shoot them, but I think that's what I'm
going to have to do :(.
Yeah testing lenses is no fun when doing too many times. Maybe my test results will give you a rough idea on what to expect.

Very interesting - so far 5 serial numbers reported in total, 2 from the 5374-range, both users reporting problems, 3 from other serial number ranges, all reporting no problems.

Let's keep this going, at least until the theory is convincingly disproved.

Actually the returned lens had similar behaviour too, but I didn't test it carefully to draw the conclusion since it had misaligned optics. The # is 5374558. Watch out Canadian guys!! I cannot say who's the dealer however. :-)

Yes, this is only ever an issue when focussing manually for landscapes. So I need to use AF at 45mm. But AF doesn't work at 16mm...

I haven't noticed that the problem is BF, although I haven't actually looked for it.

3 good non-5374 and 3 bad 5374-series. Let's get that sample size up, this is worth investigating further!

Mine is 5328285, no problem or whatsoever.

BTW, you still coming to SG this weekend? Please drop me an email if so ;-)

No problems with my 16-45 on my DS (tested it yesterday shortly for BF/FF but that was kind of stupid since it works fine for almost 2 years).

I'll post the serialnumber later since I'm at work now. Bought it in august 2004.

Been busy shooting these 2 weeks and got many nice shots which would have been impossible with primes as it would have taken too many lens switching. :-)

After the constant struggle with AF slowness (more to the DS than the lens), and BF at 16mm, I think I have mastered AF-at-45mm then zoom out to shoot method. But before I decided to send it in for a check up by Pentax Japan, I would like to do one final check. May I ask some DS + DA16-45/4 owners try this? AF at 45mm, then zoom out to 16mm and see if the camera re-AF?

These are what happened to my combo.
