Hi there,

I asked my boss for a new camera, and he needs a cost for this. We currently use a 20d, but I want to upgrade to a 5d or a 1d.

Currently use the camera for candid event shots, such as audience mingling, presenters on stage. Also use for studio portraits, and editorial imagery. Don't really need one for sports or high action shots.

Going from a 20d to a 1/5d, my current lenses won't work, will they? Have a 17-85, 50 1.8, and 75-300.

I would think my budget would include the camera body, a wide-angle (which we desperatly need), zoom, and maybe something like a fixed 35mm.

Does that sound right? Any reason to get the 1d instead of the 5d?

Thanks,
Matt

The 17-85IS won't work. Get a 24-105L IS, keep the 50mm 1.8, and sell the 75-300IS and get the 70-300IS. It's a better lens. Or get the 17-40L is you need super wide, but 24mm is pretty wide on full frame.

Canon FiveDee, Canon 2oD, Canon Gee3, and Canon S7o, Fuji Eff30.

Thanks. Had a guy in here from USA today, and he shot with a 14mm. That thing was really wide.

Any thoughts on the 1D vs. the 5D, based on what it will be used for? Events, low light, candids, studio protraits?

Thanks for the lens recommendations, that will help with budget.

Yeah I went out a few years ago to get a $400 lens as an upgrade to my 28-200 and now $30K later I'm still not done.
