Group,

I find Canon's chosen method of firmware distribution (v1.0.2.2) highly peculiar. About two weeks ago, Chuck Westfall appears on another forum and says that he has a copy, which he emails to bunches of people who request it. Then, some of those people, (ie, Fred Miranda) post it on their site.

Why is Canon not simply posting it on their own website like previous versions? Why take this "backdoor" approach?

Canon owes Fred bigtime for 1) hosting the firmware fix and 2) fixing the 1D. I hope you're getting compensated!!

They post it on their own site...

Not the same version 1.0.2.2 is latest available (apparently exclusively :) from Fred Miranda's site) not 1.0.2.0

JC...I came from the PGA Tour (Golf) where the companies not only gave the players equipment but paid us to use it.

On the other hand, professional photographers pay for everything. I've never heard of such a thing in my 65 years. I'm not knocking ya'll, believe me, I respect and admire pros too much for that...it just amazes me is all.

If Fred did all of what you indicated for Canon....well, you mean a firmware update is the thanks? Holy Moely! For some reason I don't think Canon is that cold or short sighted. If they are smart, they would make Fred Miranda part of their Advisory Staff (like golf does) and pay him his worth.

If it were golf, one of our managers would be in a Canon Executive's office as we speak, negotiating a substantial representation contract.

I have a feeling that Canon realizes that Fred Miranda has sold incredible amounts of equipment through his knowledge, influence, and his talent as a photographer. His photographs were the only reason I ordered a D30 and all those lenses.* I figured if I wanted to approach his level of photography why not use the same equipment.*

That's why they pay pro golfers ...the amateurs want to use what the pros use.

Howdy Larry!

Actually, Canon didn't give the firmware to Fred out of thankfullness... he asked for it, just like everyone else in this thread:

Fred's 1D banding fix does appear to make a difference, but frankly, I still can see remnants of what appear to be banding in his processed image. The lines look smoother, almost painterly, but I can still see them. They are much less objectionable, though, and I don't know if I'd catch them without seeing the "before" version.

Regardless, Canon should give Fred some cold hard cash for covering their hinders with this banding debacle (in such short time, might I add), and for apparently being their one-stop shop for new firmware.

That said, I won't be touching that firmware with a ten-foot-pole until Canon actually embraces it as their own. Also, because it doesn't contain any fixes I'm likely to use.

Hi, JCDoss. Didn't you hear? The latest firmware upgrade radically improves autofocus issues with the D30 in low light conditions. Better jump on this one right now, Mister. (HA!)...

I looked all over Fred's site and couldn't find the firmware update. Did he remove it? The one at the Canon site is the one I already have. I believe it's 1.0.2.0

I'll get Chuck to send me the firmware, and make it available, too. ;)

But seriously, Fred's actions ARE a great thing, and Canon should be grateful to have somebody like that out there helping support the D-30 and 1-D.

Of course, Fred's probably make a pretty decent amount of money, now that he's selling a lot of those actions. They're priced right, too.--The Unofficial Photographer of The Wilkinsons http://thewilkinsons.crosswinds.net
