New lenses announced - a bit disappointed...

...about 1.5 lbs. This will probably be close. but the Canon has a mounting surface for an optional collar. This is the way to go here. I sure don't want to mount this lens on body, then to a tripod. It would be way to front heavy. I would have to keep the friction turned way up, to keep it from flopping over. And that would really hamper smooth movements. Sigh.

I have the 70-210 and love it...handheld. I hate it when mounted on tripod. It really really needs a collar. I hate it so much, that I bought the Manfrotto long lens support gizmo, just for the A70-210. Not really convenient with a front rotating lens though, but it works for non action shots.

All this gold reminds me of my brother-in-law's mom's special
edition Cadilac with gold spoked wheels and gold trim everywhere...
That's exactly what I am talking about! ;^)

But how about making those rings wider and simply white! :-)
(I have to try this in Photoshop!)

So they have two focusing mechanisms in the lens? Impressive. We
will see what that means for price and weight.
I hope so, Jens, but the statement is unclear--as is typical with Pentax. The statement could simply refer to the image circle. These are DA lenses.

Given how many incorrect rumors surfaced about the K10D, rumors about an autofocus drive shaft in these lenses should be regarded cautiously. We may not know until they go up for sale.

But both Canon 70-200/4 have a tripod collar available. Even the IS version has a collar. Why does the pentax not have a collar?

a weight issue, its a bulk issue, plus its easyer to shoot a camera and lens w/ the lens on the tripod, not the body.

than why would tokina do it to a non USM lens???

Pentax... almost got it right... just missed the mark everso slightly. Remember sometimes the details really matter

I believe they have used the 645-lenses as model for the new DA*
series. Just look at the similarities in this shot:
Thanks, great comparison. That's OK, the "shape" looks GREAT, but what I am talking about is about that golden ring: reminds me of a paint manufacturers of cheap plastic jewelry use to "emulate" gold, but from a mile away you know it is just a cheap painted plastic.

645 color scheme is what I would like to see on a DA* series.

At the very least they won't have rotating focus rings during AF -- look at the size of the things ;)

Yes, i mentioned that to Lance on the phone earlier today. Simply incorporated an existing cosmetic design feature. Nothing wrong with that.. I quite like the look. They have to choose something that sets it apart from the standard lenses. Canon choose the red band on the L lenses.....

The Journey is the Thing

they have made that lens in an intelligent manner. It has optional collar for those that want it. And for those that don't, you are not paying for something you don't want. Very smart. HELLO? Pentax? Are you listening? Even Tokina figured it out with their 50-135.

Pentax seems to do that a lot. I think their product design managers need to be shaken up a bit. They create great products, but....there is always something that is missing. Just enough to annoy people. This was the complaint about the FA*300. Now it will be the complaint about these lenses as well.

I imagine they will be. They don't have any weathersealed lenses,
and there is little point in a weathersealed body without the
lenses.
There is very much a point with a weather-sealed camera, lenses or not.

Put it this way: with a weather-sealed camera and one that isn't, even with no lens whatsoever attached - just a gaping hole in the front - which will handle a rainstorm better? The one that will have water seeing in through every button, dial and seam, or the one that will get water in the bottom of the mirror box only?

Maybe Pentax is being overly confident in the effect of SR. :)
