New lenses announced - a bit disappointed...

Probably because of F4 aperture that the lens is not that heavy.

That's the first thing I thought.... "dang, now I have to drop my 16-45!". Probably not going to give up my $400 lens (or however much it was), but dang, 2.8 vs 4.0....

Two quick questions,
1) Won't the two Zooms make the middle 50-135 mm redundent in some
respects? I would have liked to see a 150 or 200 mm prime, but
that's just me. Only food for thought anyway.
People's needs are different :)

For me the 50-135/2.8 is the most interesting lens of the 3. For me it's just a usable 75-200/2.8 broken down to APS-C but smaller and lighter than a 35mm full-frame 70-200/4. (Lugging around 1.3-1.8kg of the full-frame pro-zooms when hiking. No way.)

I'm not! At long last the fabulous 60-250/f4.0 has been announced
as well as the expected 16-50 and 50-135 fast f2.8 zooms! It looks
great and also looks like an internal zoom too, nice!

It's just a real pity that we will have to wait until the summer of
'07 before it arrives (that's the estimate I've been given). I
think I may well pop for a DA 50-200 as an interim and small travel
lens.

How much? I've been told to expect around £750 recommended, about
the same as the Sigma 100-300 EX DG.
I hope you're right - that's around half what I'd expect (or less),
assuming the typical UK price in pounds matches the US in dollars.

That pricing was a big mistake on Pentax' part. If they're smart
they won't price the new DA*s above $1K each.
They will have to be priced at a level that reflects the cost to make them plus a profit. Therefore, I hope they are NOT cheap, as if they are cheap then that means that they may not be of the highest quality. I am prepared to pay extra for the best quality available, just like Pentax's previous * lenses. If you want a cheap 16-50 zoom, then you can opt for the DA16-45 f4. If you want the best available, then we have the option of an optimum DA*15-50 f2.8 with the best image quality. Simple. I do NOT want Pentax to compromise on image quality and if that means extra cost, then so be it.

I don't think it will be all that light anyway. It wouldn't surprise me if the DA*50-135 f2.8 is about 1kg or more.

Not really - that f2.8 is nice. The 50-135 is the DA equivalent of
an FA 80-200 zoom, and many people regard the FA* 80-200/f2.8
as one of the best lenses Pentax ever produced. I know that I
use mine a lot, and have been really happy with it.

I'm excited at the new lens announcements, and I expect that
I'll end up with all three of them (even though I never bought
the FA 28-70/f2.8) - currently I have nothing wider than 21mm.
I almost bought the 16-45; now I'm glad I waited.

I want them, I want them

sigh, not until Mar 2007...

Typical Pentax...

These products are designed for exclusive use with PENTAX K- and
*istD-series digital SLR cameras. They are being developed as the
top-of-the-line star ( * ) lens to deliver exceptional performance
and optimal image quality.
These products will feature the PENTAX KAF2 mount, which
incorporates additional electrical contacts to drive a built-in
supersonic motor used in autofocusing operation.
This means the new USM lenses are backwards compatable. Wastn't there some worry that the new lenses would only be usable on the K10D and later bodies? Great to know that I will be able to use them with my *istD as well.

Hi lance,

I agree, but I would not like it to be way over the top in pricing. It still needs to a reasonable market price. The same as other brands with their better quality lenses. I think some of the FA lenses are a bit expensive, not saying they not worth it, but possibly the price is driven up because they are as rare as hens teeth, and buyers and sellers know how hard they are to find.
Cheers

Never judge a photo by the person who has taken it.

Good point.

I don't see any triipod collar either. Pentax therefore thinks the
long lenses are therefore suitable for hand holding with SR on.
They're probably right. I've had reasonable success hand-holding
my 80-200/f2.8 (sometimes even with a 1.4x TC), and this new
lens looks to be significantly lighter. Add SR, and it should work
just fine hand-held.

Well, this is good news indeed! If it's true, and the new line of lenses will be screw AF compatible, I'm going to get one of the longer two primes they have planned. How I'm going to be able to afford it, I don't know yet... :-D

I hope they price them sensibly. There's no reason for a 300/4 to cost more than say US$1500.
