New lenses announced - a bit disappointed...

...shopping done, house painted (probably not very well), dust dusted, in fact any job you got that needs doing between now and March 2007, please contact "Grants LBA Work Services"
LOL

March should just about give me enough time to save some money, rob a bank or sell the kids....decisions! decsions!

DISCLAIMER: joking about the jobs bit. ;-)

I'm not! At long last the fabulous 60-250/f4.0 has been announced
as well as the expected 16-50 and 50-135 fast f2.8 zooms! It looks
great and also looks like an internal zoom too, nice!
Yes Richard, these are what I have been patiently waiting for :-)
It's just a real pity that we will have to wait until the summer of
'07 before it arrives (that's the estimate I've been given). I
think I may well pop for a DA 50-200 as an interim and small travel
lens.
Well I got that DA50-200 as a travel telezoom as you know and I am very happy for it in that mode.

I am selling off my surplus gear (all those little curios that have no real need for) to clear the decks (i.e. shelf space) for some things out of the new lens range. If the new DA*60-250 is good enough I mind even consider moving the F*300/4.5 out of my collection but this is a superb optic as you know and the 60-250 will need to be VERY good!
What will come first, K10D or the 60-240? Mmm, what a dilema! Maybe
I can dispose of some stuff to help finance both.
I am trying to have my K10D before it hits the shops but I am sure many will be ahead of me!

Thanks for the info, the lenses look great.

Why the disappointment though?

If you are like many of us who are forking out for the K10D, then we need a few months to save up again for these lenses. ;-) I would rather they be designed and manufactured correctly rather than be quickly thrown together for the sake of an early release.

I wonder what this announcement will do to ebay-prices on
existing/older lenses without weather sealing and SSM....
Hmm, without prices I don't think the impact would be substantial. Once the prices are announced, I think we can definitely see ebay prices change. However, there seems to be a great number of people interested in the K10D, so ebay prices may go up either way (supply vs. demand).

It looks to be on the large heavy side. I would think that it would
stress the camera mount on a tripod or monopod.

Just wondering why.

Thanks
Gene
Just noticed that myself. If you compare it to the 16-50/2.8 you'll notice that it's not that much bigger for such a long zoom. It should be below the 1kg mark, and thus no need for a tripod collar. If this is true, then it will be an outstanding lens!

Finally! Pentax delivers something in the telephoto range.

But seriously, these are great additions to the line-up, so I don't understand what's the dissapointment... Can't wait to get my hand on these lenses!
Max.

Probably due to the new factory having just been commissioned & about to begin production.

Probably it's big because of it's f/4 constant aperture(or the other two are small)! It' looks like a very interesting lens, hope it will be sharp at all settings and f-stop(probably it's a DA*).

The lenses do look great, and I think we can't really fathom the impact these lenses will have on the rest of the industry. Have you noticed that there are no tripod collars?

The lenses are lightweight, weather sealed, and with Supersonic AF. I guess Pentax just introduced the most exiting zooms in the market. Now where are all the whiners from the other forums (lol)....

I'm just a little disappointed that they had to postpone the release date. The initial roadmap said the end of this year. Postponing a release is never a good signal. What if they're further delayed?

So to put this into perspective with ppl used to 35mm focal lengths (rounded to common lengths):

a 24-70 f/2.8 - looks smaller than the full frame version
a 70-200 f/2.8 - looks smaller than the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8
a 100-400 f/4 - looks like size inbetween the Sigma 70-200 and 100-300 f/4

Dang... man if I didn't have LBA before, I do now!

The 60-250mm seems like he don't have a tripod collar?
Pentax don't make the same mistake as the FA300mm4.5 please!!!

Two quick questions,

1) Won't the two Zooms make the middle 50-135 mm redundent in some respects? I would have liked to see a 150 or 200 mm prime, but that's just me. Only food for thought anyway.

2) Any idea if the Extreme III type SD cards will offer better performance with the K10D than the Ultra IIs?
Thanks
Rob

Well you can't reach the 50-135 range with f/2.8 with the 60-250/4, it might be useful for some people out there.....

... that is a silly thing to put in the headline post. Sorry, I
feel that is a bit irresponsible on such a announcement when
there seems little to be disappointed about even if there is a wait
Well it was my initial feeling. But I do think the lenses look great. Sorry that you feel that way. As you may have noticed there is little depression in this thread regardless of my initial disappointment....

As for being irresponsible... I don't work for Pentax so I can hardly be called irresponsible in this matter :-))
A bit disappointing that we have to wait until March 2007 IMO.

Oh, thats possible. But wouldn't an ON/OFF switch make more sense?
It's just the labeling and inline with other USM lens markings. It probably doing more than just an on/off switch. The camera body has to be informed the switch position as well.

I'd imagine when USM lens is used, the body switch has to be on either AF-S or AF-M and let the lens switch to determine AF/MF.
