New lenses announced - a bit disappointed...

I'm not! At long last the fabulous 60-250/f4.0 has been announced as well as the expected 16-50 and 50-135 fast f2.8 zooms! It looks great and also looks like an internal zoom too, nice!

It's just a real pity that we will have to wait until the summer of '07 before it arrives (that's the estimate I've been given). I think I may well pop for a DA 50-200 as an interim and small travel lens.

How much? I've been told to expect around £750 recommended, about the same as the Sigma 100-300 EX DG.

I know which one I'd prefer!

What will come first, K10D or the 60-240? Mmm, what a dilema! Maybe I can dispose of some stuff to help finance both.

Marketing schedule : To be marketed in March 2007
Looks good but the range is a bit odd...but I would still like it.
Odd? I don't think so. It's just a typical 2.8 telephoto zoom broken down to APS-C size. I've been waiting for such a lens for ages...

...black, black, black!

Ok, not bad, Pentax.

Now, where are the matched DA* teleconverters, the 200 Macro, the 200/2.8, 300/2.8 or 4.0, the xx-400, the...

Okay, okay, let's be happy with what we have. Will have. Will have hope that they meet their schedule.

No word on whether those lenses work on the "old" bodies.

Cheers

That pricing was a big mistake on Pentax' part. If they're smart
they won't price the new DA*s above $1K each.
Then they should be called DA Limited. ' ' has its implied values.

Read carefully the OP message. It says for K and *istD series bodies.

Read back carefully Jens ( I know it's difficult with this news...)

What great news, 3 top the line lenses from Pentax.

I'm very excited about this news.

wll

... that is a silly thing to put in the headline post. Sorry, I feel that is a bit irresponsible on such a announcement when there seems little to be disappointed about even if there is a wait
A bit disappointing that we have to wait until March 2007 IMO.

The Journey is the Thing

Looks like they have switches for moving from MF to AF, like Sigma lenses do. What happened to the "quick shift focus system" like DA14 or DA40 has? If they don't that's a bit disappointing.

Jens:

Assuming that the OP is quoting verbatim from Pentax literature, doesn't the quotation below suggest that they will be the new SSM lens (i.e., KAF2 mount) but that they will also be backward compatible with the the K and older istD-series bodies (including operative autofocus)? I'm assuming the they would not say the are "designed exclusively" for these bodies if the autofocus worked only on the K10.

Is this evidence that at least for this generation of lens, the lenses will have the old AF drive as well as the SSM motors installed?

Maybe I'm just an optimist!

The reason for the switch is to disable/disengage SDM/USM motor. The AF/MF switch on the body will not do the job on USM lens (it only retracts the AF shaft on body). Quick-Shift-Focus system may still be there. All Canon and Nikon lenses have this switch on lens.

Hi Foxbat and Jan,

indeed, my bad. No excuse, I'm not really excited about those lenses, but I am glad everyone likes them ;)

So they have two focusing mechanisms in the lens? Impressive. We will see what that means for price and weight.

Cheers

start to the SSM model line.

Congrats to all the Pentax owners. And is stands now I'll be joining you near the beginning of November :-)) K10D time!

Gene

Gene,

You beat me too it. I was just about to mention the MF/AF switches. I think you are right about the Quick Shift Focus.

What's even worse than losing the QS is that there is an independent MF/AF-S/AF-C switch on the K10D. I hope this doesn't mean we will have to switch the body to MF & the lens to MF before we can use MF. Nah, they couldn't have done that, it seem too absurd. But I wonder what the purpose of those switches are then...

It looks to be on the large heavy side. I would think that it would stress the camera mount on a tripod or monopod.

Just wondering why.

Thanks
Gene

disappointed?? why? I am fired up! March 2007 is not that far,
especially if you can print those 3 beauties and hang it up on the
wall!
I see what you mean, but the previous roadmap said end of this year (december), and with the K10D coming out in November, it will be minimum 4 months before you can truly benefit from the faster AF and weather sealing.
oh, oh :-)

I wonder what this announcement will do to ebay-prices on existing/older lenses without weather sealing and SSM....
you bet, but do we know the price tag? expected MSRP?? that gold
ring does scare me a bit.
Me too....
