This cabin is located about 10 miles East of Petoskey, MI. I've photographed it at various times of the year and in dozens of different compositions. I love photographing old cabins and this has long been my favorite. Constructive comments always welcome.

Mike,

I like it. The shot I mean, not sure about the cabin. Makes you want to know more: is the cabin nestled deep in the woods, or is it on the side of the road next to a 7-11? Does someone live there? What would it look like from a bird's view?

Re technicalities, the (possibly inaccurate) presentation on my office notebook loooks a little burnt out in places, especially the roofline which seems indistinguishable from the hillside behind. If that's so you could try adding a duplicate layer, desaturating and inverting to turn it into a negative, some gaussian blur and use multiplier mode at roughly 40%. This decreases contrast and increases saturation. There was a good description of the method in, if I recall, DP REview around the middle of last year. If you're interested in trying it I can email you my own action which does all of the above.

cheers,

james

Very nice shot Mike. As a fellow Michiganian I am familiar with the area. Nice composition. How about some of the technical details?--Mike Bauer

you're from Michigan..... 'cause then you'd be a "Michigander"..... really....

but just kidding though.... i live in the detroit area, but i've only been in the area for a couple of years.... originally from northern ontario.... where cabins like that are also found (deep in the woods though.... we do have modern town and cities up there... ;-)

cheers

I have always resisted the term "Michigander"! I have spent a lot of time in Ontario, where are you from?--Mike Bauer

Mike.... from a place very far away.... Hearst.... about 375miles due North of Sault Ste Marie....

I was in Windsor for a couple of years until a short while ago, when I moved to Southfield.

PS.... I gotta admit... "Michigander" is kinda weird... don't know how it came about... but it does kinda "flow" well nonetheless...

Cheers

I used to cover that area as a sales rep, but now have been cut back from Illinois to the West Coast. That area of the country is one of the well kept secrets IMHO. I used to go up that way to Alpina and across to Gaylord and across to Traverse City and Petosky. A real photo opportunity to say the least. Especially when the trees have leaves. Enjoy!

Good accent there "Ya der Hey". LOL. That Upper Penninsula is like the "Land Before Time". Awesome scenery and still not so darn populated that you can't get off the beaten path. Some nice rivers, lakes and also waterfalls.
I spent 6 years in Da U.P. Sometimes I miss dat place, eh?
Nice shot!

Hi, James. Thanks for your comments. I suspect your laptop's screen combined with the reduced resolution of the posted image is showing you burnout in areas. In fact, nothing's burned out and I believe the exposure to be as close to perfect as I've ever done. Take care...

Hi, Lee. I spend lots of time in the Petoskey area. I have a vacation home that sits on the shore of Lake Michigan in Petoskey. Now that I've retired I spend lots of time up there. Petoskey received a record 92 inches of snow in a 4-day period 2 weeks ago. They normally get lots of snow up there but this was way above normal. My actual home is in a suburb of Detroit (Taylor). Large numbers of people living in the Detroit area have 2nd homes in the northern part of the state. On friday nights the I75 freeway heading North is usually jammed up with traffic caused by Detroiters heading north. Same thing heading South on Sunday nights. Take care...

ugh! michigander sounds horrible! both terms are used, but i believe michiganian is correct. at least it should be, it's much more sophisticated and dignified

Damn that looks cold. I used to live back there when I was a kid...that was 24 yrs ago. That photo brings back some old memories.
