Mini review after the samples:

Metering? OK, but certains situations are problematics.

Focus? Slow but very reliable.

Image quality? Very good. The jpeg engine is fabulous. Very easy to post process. Not much noise up to 400 iso.

Ergonomics? I'm having a hard time getting use to it (I also have a D200). Maybe it's a matter of time...

The real test? Print look awesome

Fun factor? Very high!

I bought the E1 with the intention to use it outside in situations where i'm afraid to use my D200 (for me a very very good tool). Otherwise, I like the Olympus's color rendition and the sharpness of the 14-54.

I'm not in pixel peeping, I think it's a waist of time and more important to learn to work with the tool you have (be aware of the limitations of the camera) and use it in a favorable context. Endless discussion about noise and amount of MegaPixel is depressing.

Finally, I had the chance to buy for a very good price and I feel the E1 is already a classic.

I bought mine for pretty much the same reason.

I was curious because while we get a number of returning Oly drivers from Nikon, it is rare that we get a virgin holding higher end equipment.

Nicely put !

And, by the way, nice pictures you posted. If they show what you think is Oly' color rendition, those are spot on.

My preferred is the lady's portrait though : what beautiful eyes !

Thank you Cynops. The young lady is my little girl (12 years old) and her eyes are indeed fabulous (Well a father is a father).

I did try to print some of those pictures (canon i9900) and the ouput is spectacular.

Fabalous images. The colors are excellent. The E-1 still shines in many situations. I've always been impressed with people's images using the E-1 and 14-54 combo.

I'm impressed by the first shot: the left side looked to me as water, like a (dirt) lake. At first sight, I mean. But I can see again the water, by half closing my eyes...

Sorry, dumb comment on a shot, just to know if it's me, or the level of ssri in my blood... :-)

Very interesting comment. As you see, photography is about perception. For example, it's possible to see water in a garage door.
My picture is not mine anymore...

Thank you! You have vision... Nice comment. I always thought that my best lens is my left eye. I regularly work with it trying to update the performance. So much work to do...

I too saw water in that garage door...

I added a D200 to my Oly kit....found the D200 pretty darn close to what I get from my E-1. Nikon is a lot to get my arms around sometimes with all of the focusing modes, points and so on...E-1 ergonomics for me were instantaneous, I came from an E-20 tho...

You'll grow to like the simplicity and the way most everything is where you expect it to be and jpegs are great from the E-1.

Cheers and Welcome,

Bill

For me, at least for the few samples I did try, the quality is very good and 8 X 10 are sharp and looking great. Same with the 11 X 14 size. By the print, I can see that the E1 is a professionnal tool.

The jpeg file support very well intense postprocessing (you should read Adam-t comments about that). I would say that for that matter, that the E1 is better than the D200 (a bit harder to process D200 file, those having less DR)... Don't forget that I have in my possession a 14-54 lens which contribute to the overall sharpness of the picture.

Otherwise, the D200 is complex and performant tool. The metering is fabulous (so so with the E1).

Printing with the E1? The quality rivals the D200.
