D200 firmware

This is from Nikon's website....

"Will there be a firmware update for D200 cameras to adopt the functions that are incorporated in D2Xs?

Yes. Nikon plans to offer a firmware update for the D200, however it will only adopt the D2Xs "Image authentication" option in the setup menu. Support for the optional Wireless Transmitter WT-3 will also be included in the firmware update.

Is the Image Authentication Software compatible with other cameras besides the D2Xs?

Yes. Nikon plans to provide compatibility with the Image Authentication software for the D2X , D2Hs and D200, via firmware updates for these cameras."

Now, can someone tell me what Image Authentification is???

Speed is significant and interesting but accuracy is downright
fascinating
Actually, it is. But only if you buy the WT-3. Firmware 2.0 is on the WT-3 Setup Utility CD.

Definitely looks like an image to me - tick.

I can only guess that it places an un editable refernce that confirms the camera that took the picture. Might catch a few paparrazzi out for taking pics that they should not have. I liken it to the code that colour photocopiers print on every page so that counterfeit money can at least be traced to the machine that produced it.
Just a thought.

Two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts do.

I could see how that would be very useful. Not to me, but to somebody. In fact I could see some agencies (Reuters) insisting on it in future.

mine did, but the bank statement was another matter!

Why would Nikon only include the D200 firmware update on the WT-3 Setup Utility CD? Unless that is the ONLY change in the firmware (being labeled 2.0, I would imagine it has many other changes?).

the standard classifications are:
  • emergency
  • required
  • important
  • nice to have
with the approach Nikon have taken with the release of the 2.0 firmware, the assumption is there are Required fixes related to the operation of the WT-3A (note that i'm not drawing a distinction between new features and fixes) and a bunch of other fixes which fall into the Important and Nice to Have categories.

also note that historically, Nikon has done a pretty good job with initial firmware releases. subsequent versions have added very little to the camera's operation which users could get excited over. ...dav

don't wait for technology -- it won't wait for you

Why would Nikon only include the D200 firmware update on the WT-3
Setup Utility CD?
Because it is required to use the WT-3 and they want to sell the WT-3 now ; ).

Yes, it has the image authentication ability, for example.
